BWW News: A Look at the State of the Theatre in DC with Jane Horwitz, Nelson Pressley and Celia Wren

For theatre lovers in our area, we always look forward to what our theatre companies have in store for us in their upcoming seasons. We look to see if there are any trends that stand out to us as audience members. We also see growth in many companies with each new season of shows. Anyone that's been following DC theatre for a while will notice how things have changed in the last twenty or thirty years. One of the biggest examples of this would be the clean up and revitalization of 14th Street, which had direct implications for Studio Theatre and Source.

An American in Paris's Matthew Scott to Headline The Black Box BROADWAY SERIES

Broadway's Matthew Scott performs a one-night-only show at THE BLACK BOX, downtown Franklin's theater, music and event venue, on Saturday, January 21. Beginning at 8 p.m., the event is the second in THE BLACK BOX Broadway Series, sponsored by Childs Engineering. The series, new this season, kicked off in November with Tony Award winner Beth Leavel.  

Creative Cauldron Presents 7th Annual PASSPORT TO THE WORLD Concert Series 1/7- 1/29

Creative Cauldron's 7th Annual Passport to the World Concert Series will be held from January 7th to January 29th, 2017 at ArtSpace Falls Church, 410 South Maple Avenue.  Sponsored by Mark F. Werblood, Esq. and curated by local musicians Lynn Veronneau and Ken Avis (of acclaimed jazz-fusion group VERONNEAU who will kick off the series), The Passport to the World Concert Series treats audiences to musical performances from a broad spectrum of genres: jazz, Latin, Celtic, classical, delta blues, and American folk. 

Cast Complete for MARK FELT, SUPERSTAR at York Theatre Company

The York Theatre Company, dedicated to the development of new musicals and preserving musical gems from the past, has announced the complete cast for the New2NY presentation of the new musical Mark Felt, Superstar with book, music and lyrics by Joshua Rosenblum (Bush Is Bad, Fermat's Last Tango).

Theater J will present the intellectually stunning Tony Award-winning drama Copenhagen this winter, directed by Eleanor Holdridge. Michael Frayn's Copenhagen investigates the historical 1941 meeting of German physicist Werner Heisenberg and his Danish counterpart Niels Bohr as they contemplate the creation of the atom bomb. Iconic Classic Drama A DOLL'S HOUSE to Begin This Winter at the Huntington

The Huntington Theatre Company presents the iconic classic drama A Doll's House, by Henrik Ibsen, adapted by Bryony Lavery, and directed by Boston favorite Melia Bensussen (Awake and Sing!, Luck of the Irish, and Circle Mirror Transformation at the Huntington). Performances run January 6 - February 5, 2017 at the Avenue of the Arts / BU Theatre.

Broadway Classic WEST SIDE STORY Set for Extended Run at The Wick Theatre

The Wick Theatre will present the timeless and groundbreaking 1957 Broadway smash, West Side Story. This season's most requested production has already been extended and will run January 12 - February 26, 2017. The gala opening night is set for Saturday, January 14.

Broadway Legend Chita Rivera to Perform in Broadway @ The Nourse Series This Spring

Chita Rivera is a living Broadway legend and a two-time Tony winner who originated the Broadway roles of Anita in 'West Side Story,' Rosie in 'Bye Bye Birdie,' Velma in 'Chicago,' and appeared in the original casts of 'Guys and Dolls,' 'Can Can,' 'Jerry's Girls' and many others. Producer Mark Cortale announced today that she will be coming to San Francisco for one night only on April 29 at 8:00 PM, joining a stellar season that kicks off this week with two-time Tony Award winner Christine Ebersole on Saturday, January 7 at 8:00 PM.

Remount of AN OCTOROON Will Launch Woolly Mammoth's 2017-18 Season

Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company announces its first production of Season 38, the remount of An Octoroon by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, directed by Nataki Garrett. The show will reunite the entire cast and production teams from Woolly's 2016 production and will run from July 18 to August 6, 2017.

A.C.T. to Stage Pulitzer Winner's New Play JOHN This Spring

American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) continues its 2016-17 season with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker's new play, John (February 22-April 23, 2017). A haunting drama that took off-Broadway by storm, John is the latest hit from American theater's hottest new voice-Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Baker (The Flick).

AS YOU LIKE IT, Featuring Original Music by Obie Winner Heather Christian, to Launch New Year at Folger Theatre

Folger Theatre continues its celebrated 25th anniversary season with As You Like It, one of Shakespeare's most beloved comedies. Directed by Gaye Taylor Upchurch, this classic tale filled with love, laughter, and mistaken identity features original songs composed by Heather Christian and dances by Alexandra Beller. As You Like It is on stage from January 24 through March 5, 2017.

Matthew Broderick Joins The New Group Production of EVENING AT THE TALK HOUSE

The New Group announces today that two-time Tony Award winner Matthew Broderick joins Wallace Shawn's Evening at the Talk House, with, as previously announced, Jill Eikenberry, John Epperson, Larry Pine, Wallace Shawn, Claudia Shear, Annapurna Sriram and Michael Tucker, representing full casting for this U.S. premiere directed by Scott Elliott.
