On January 13, 17 and 19 Franz Welser-Most and The Cleveland Orchestra continue an ongoing commitment to present opera at Severance Hall with a made-for-Cleveland production of Richard Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos which is being performed for the first time in the Orchestra's history. In his years as music director, Welser-Most has led The Cleveland Orchestra in performances of many orchestral works by Richard Strauss, as well as presentations of four other Strauss operas: Elektra (2004), Der Rosenkavalier (2007), Salome (2012), and Daphne (2015).
The Second City's A Christmas Carol: Twist Your Dickens returns to Portland Center Stage at The Armory with a new Scrooge played by Isaac Lamb, new jokes, and the same uproariously funny experience Portland audiences have come to expect. A ghostly mystery begins a season of DC-area premiere productions by the Washington Stage Guild' (WSG). Summerland by Arlitia Jones tells the mysterious tale of William H. Mumler, a 'spirit photographer' with a talent for capturing haunting images from the world beyond the veil. The Civil War has ended, and a grieving nation sees many turning to spiritualism to contact the dead. Mumler sees his business boom as mourners, including a very famous one, flock to his studio. A New York City police official makes it his mission to prove it's a fraud, but finds that harder than he hoped. Based on a true story, this area premiere opens Thursday, Sept. 27 and runs through Sunday, October 21.
Seattle Repertory Theatre is excited to present famed monologist Mike Daisey's newest work, A People's History. In this series of 18 stand-alone monologues, Daisey uses his razor-sharp wit to explore a history of the U.S. he was not taught in high school. From the first landing of Columbus to the election of Donald Trump, Daisey will contrast his high school history book with Howard Zinn's electrifying A People's History Of The United States. Each night of the production will feature a fresh chapter from the history book - chapter content to be performed night to night will not be disclosed in advance of the performance as part of the experience.
