The Kretzer Piano Music Foundation's popular MUSIC FOR THE MIND concert series returns next week with A Summer Soiree with Jill & Rich.
In a unique collaboration with CSU San Marcos, theatre artist and educator Rebecca Johannsen returns to San Diego to present her moving and powerful exploration of female soldiers. Women at War is devised from Johannsen's interviews conducted with the US Army's Female Engagement Team (FET) Unit, deployed to Afghanistan from 2012-2013. The unit's mission was to engage with the local female Afghan population to build relationships and gather intelligence. They often found themselves in combat zones before women were legally allowed in combat, and received intensive physical training to prepare for the mission. The production runs November 7-10. Talk-backs will follow each production in collaboration with CSUSM Veteran's Center.

The Other Side of the Wall, Atlanta's only Spanish-language improv group, was announced as the inaugural recipient of The Jamie Hawkins-Gaar Memorial Scholarship at Dad's Garage Theatre. The scholarship, dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion within the Atlanta's improv community, honors the life and legacy Jamie Hawkins-Gaar, who was a improviser and friend of Dad's Garage.
The opulent, newly restored Emerson Colonial, the historic crown jewel among Boston's glittering theatrical houses, is the perfect setting for the equally opulent but imperfect stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann's anachronistic 2001 movie musical MOULIN ROUGE. Originally opened in 1900, the ornately adorned gilt and red velvet theater is now celebrating its grand re-opening with a glitzy, gaudy pre-Broadway tryout of a mash-up of 1900 Bohemian Paris and a contemporary jukebox of pop rock, techno, disco and punk music. The result is a whirling dervish of sights and sounds designed more for effect than affect. The audience, obviously familiar with and adoring of the original movie, rapturously cheers on cue. But for those seeking a more nostalgic emotional connection to the material, this MOULIN ROUGE may seem more rock concert than musical theater.
