LUCIA BERLIN: STORIES WORD FOR WORD Opens 2/17 at Z Below

Word for Word's first production of their 25th Anniversary Season is Lucia Berlin:Stories running February 14-March 11, in the Z Below Theater in San Francisco. Lucia Berlin:Stories opens with press performances February 17 & 18, Saturday 8 PM and Sunday 3 PM  (previews Feb. 14 - 16). The stories are from Lucia Berlin's posthumously published, critically acclaimed, A Manual for Cleaning Women featuring the stories 'Her First Detox', 'Emergency Room Notebook 1977', 'Unmanageable', '502' and 'Here It Is Saturday'. Directed by Nancy Shelby and JoAnne Winter, Lucia Berlin:Stories is set to an evocative jazz score by Marcus Shelby, and illuminated with vibrant projections by Naomie Kremer. Author Lydia Davis in The New Yorker described Berlin's work: 'Lucia Berlin's stories are electric, they buzz and crackle as the live wires touch....This is exhilarating writing' On Sunday, February 25,following the 3PM performance: Lucia's Sons, a post-show talk with Jeff Berlin and David Berlin in conversation with the audience and remarking about the performances, stories, and their life with their mother Lucia Berlin.

Written by Haleh Roshan Stilwell and directed by Jaki Bradley (Good Men Wanted), FREE FREE FREE FREE is based on the true story of the Diggers, an anarchist theater collective formed out of the San Francisco Mime Troupe; the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense and Students for a Democratic Society; and the rise of Asian American solidarity. Each group fights against capital and exploitation, fights for liberation, and envisions an America and a world beyond constant war, immeasurable poverty, and global hunger. But how the f**k do we, they, we get from here to there?

Theater For the New City (TNC) presents the world premiere engagement of AMERICA'S FAVORITE NEWSCASTER, a new musical with book and lyrics by Tom Attea, music by Arthur Abrams, and directed by Mark Marcante (the creative team behind the acclaimed Heather Smiley For President, Living in a Musical, An American Worker, etc.).

Josh Kornbluth's BRAIN IMPROVS Extends At The Marsh

Due to popular demand, The Marsh San Francisco will extend Josh Kornbluth's insightful Josh's Brain Improvs from January 31 to March 28. The statistics are daunting when it comes to dementia one in three seniors dies with Alzheimer's or another type of dementia; every 66 seconds someone in the US develops the disease. Kornbluth, who is currently engaged in a residency as a scholar at the Global Health Institute, presents Josh's Brain Improvs, a series of improvisations based on his experiences working at the Memory and Aging Center at UCSF and Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. Kornbluth, who is spending his time with people who have dementia and their caregivers, as well as researchers, nurses, social workers, and others, shares stories from the Brain Place (as he refers to it) - shedding a personal light on this national epidemic. Each performance includes a post-show talkback with various brain experts, in which audience members can ask questions from those in the field working to combat this disease. Josh's Brain Improvs will be presented 7:30pm on the last Wednesday of every other month beginning January 31 at The Marsh San Francisco, 1062 Valencia St., San Francisco. Taking place in an 1870s alive with danger, romance, and comic surprises, fearless adventurer Phileas Fogg and his faithful valet circle the globe in an unheard-of 80 days. In the hilariously theatrical style of The 39 Steps, five actors portray dozens of characters in a thrilling race against time and treachery, recreating one of the greatest adventures of all time. Full of stampeding elephants, raging typhoons, and runaway trains, Around the World in 80 Days, adapted by the award-winning playwright Mark Brown, offers an imaginative and ingenious expedition for the whole family.
