Photo Coverage: Remembering Billie Allen

As reported by The New York Times last weekend, Billie Allen, who helped "bridge the racial gap" both on and off-Broadway in the 1950s and '60s, passed away on December 29, 2015. She was 90 years old.

Trinity Rep to Honor Oskar and Laurie Eustis & Elizabeth Z. Chace at 2016 Pell Awards

At the 20th annual Pell Awards, Trinity Repertory Company will award Oskar Eustis and Laurie Eustis with the Pell Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts. Oskar currently serves as the artistic director of The Public Theater. Elizabeth Z. Chace, local businesswoman and philanthropist will be honored with the Charles Sullivan Award for Distinguished Service in the Arts. Nominations are now being accepted for additional local honorees. Actress Regina Taylor Performs with Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Tonight

The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to announce that award-winning actress, playwright and director Regina Taylor will be narrating poems of Dr. Maya Angelou during the world premiere performances of newly-commissioned orchestral works this weekend, Nov. 13-14 at historic Music Hall.

Actress Regina Taylor to Perform with Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, 11/13

CINCINNATI – The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to announce that award-winning actress, playwright and director Regina Taylor will be narrating poems of Dr. Maya Angelou during the world premiere performances of newly-commissioned orchestral works Nov. 13-14 at historic Music Hall. The works, written by pre-eminent American composers Jonathan Bailey Holland, Kristin Kuster and T.J. Cole, are based on Dr. Angelou's poems “Forgive,” “Elegy” and “Equality,” which Ms. Taylor will narrate as part of the performance of the works. The concerts (11 a.m. Nov. 13 and 8 p.m. Nov. 14) mark the culmination of the CSO's annual One City, One Symphony initiative, designed to bring people together through music. Also on the concert program is Dvo?ák's beloved Symphony No. 9 (“From the New World”) and Beethoven's Leonore Overture No. 2. 

Theatre School at DePaul University to Host 27th Annual Awards for Excellence in the Arts

The Theatre School at DePaul University (John Culbert, Dean) is pleased to present The 2015 Awards for Excellence in the Arts gala on Monday, November 9, 2015, in the Atlantic Ballroom of the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel. The Radisson Blu is located at 221 North Columbus Drive. The event will begin with a 6 PM cocktail reception, followed by dinner and program at 7 PM, and will conclude with a dessert reception.

Using Beaty's signature blend of comedy, poetry, music, and multi-character transformation, Mr. Joy is a hilarious and heart-warming exploration of one community's journey to heal in order to dream again and discover boundless joy.

NY Public Library for the Performing Arts Examines 'HEAD SHOTS' in New Exhibition

Almost as long as there has been photography, performers have used portraits to represent themselves for casting and promotion. In the new exhibition Head Shots: Performer Portraits from Daguerreotype to Digital, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center in Lincoln Center showcases its vast collection of head shots to illustrate the photos' role in the casting and marketing process, as well as how these pictures evolved alongside modern technology. Head Shots is currently on display in The Library for the Performing Arts' Vincent Astor Gallery, Shelby Cullom Davis Museum through August 8, 2015.

The Grammy Award-winning bebop legend is the subject of Charlie Parker's YARDBIRD, the first world premiere in almost four decades for Opera Philadelphia, recognized by Opera News as “one of the leading instigators of new work in the country.” The new chamber opera was created for American tenor Lawrence Brownlee, a nominee for the 2015 International Opera Male Singer of the Year Award, by composer Daniel Schnyder, whose “thrilling classical-tinged jazz blend…constantly pushes the envelope” (Jazz Times), to a libretto by award-winning poet and playwright Bridgette Wimberly. Directed by Ron Daniels under the leadership of Music Director Corrado Rovaris, Charlie Parker's YARDBIRD premieres in Opera Philadelphia's Aurora Series for Chamber Opera, crowning the company's 40th Anniversary Season with a five-performance run in the Kimmel Center's intimate Perelman Theater (June 5–14).
