'Day for Empathy' 2019 Observed Today, Continuing In Honor of the Late, Beloved Roger Ebert's Legacy

In a fitting sequel to last year's daylong slate of activities across Chicago, rogerebert.com, and the Roger and Chaz Ebert Foundation once again are honoring their namesake's legacy with the 2019 observance of Day4Empathy in the city. Today, Thursday, April 4th is the sixth anniversary of the celebrated film critic and author's untimely death, and to that end the Day4Empathy continues to reinforce the late Roger Ebert's embrace of the universal concepts of empathy, and his staunch belief in the necessity of humility, compassion and paying small, unassuming acts of kindness forward.

Happy Birthday Elena Roger! In 2006, after a lengthy search, Argentinean actress Elena Roger became an overnight sensation starring in the title role in Michael Grandage's widely hailed production of EVITA in the West End and later brought the role to Broadway. A complete unknown to the rest of the world, Roger Starred in multiple theatrical productions and television shows in her native Argentina. Most recently Roger won the 2009 Olivier Award for Best Actress for her performance as Edith Piaf in The Donmar Theatre production of Piaf.

Wood Street Galleries is proud to present the world premiere of 'Shortplayer,' a new composition by renowned artist and composer Jem Finer. 'Shortplayer' will be performed by Finer leading a group of Pittsburgh's finest musicians at 9:30 p.m. Friday, October 1 at Wood Street Galleries, immediately following the Downtown Gallery Crawl. ('Shortplayer' concert admission is $10/$8 students.) The performance marks the Pittsburgh launch of Finer's acclaimed artwork Longplayer, a 1,000-year-long composition that has played continuously since 1999, and which arrives in Pittsburgh as part of Wood Street Galleries' sound-installation show, Audio Space (Oct. 1-Dec. 31, 2010).
