Goodman Theatre Launches Playwright's Unit

Goodman Theatre proudly launches the Playwrights' Unit Unit-a brand new season-long residency program designed to nurture Chicago's most promising playwrights. The four inaugural writers, selected by Artistic Director and Director of New Play Development Robert Falls and the Goodman's artistic staff, are Seth Bockley (Jon, The Twins Would Like to Say; winner of the Goodman's 2009 Ofner Prize), Lisa Dillman (Detail of a Larger Work, Rock Shore), Laura Jacqmin (Ski Dubai, Look, We are Breathing) and Rohina M Malik alik (Yasmina's Necklace, Unveiled). The writers will develop new plays over the course of the residency, culminating in final readings of their works-in-progress in Spring 2011. The Playwrights' Unit is part of the Goodman's ongoing initiatives to commission and develop new plays. This ambitious program has resulted in such plays as the 2009 Pulitzer Prize-winner Ruined by Lynn Nottage and the upcoming Stage Kiss by Sarah Ruhl and Mary by Thomas Bradshaw-as well as the New Stages Series (January 14 - 16 and 21 - 23, 2011).

Goodman Theatre's perennial holiday classic A Christmas Carol, consistently included among the Midwest's top-tier holiday events, returns for the 33rd season. Renowned Chicago actor John Judd appears for the first time in the legendary role of Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, 'Goodman Theatre's annual Christmas gift to Chicago' (Daily Herald) for more than three decades. Judd leads a cast of 26 this holiday season-including 10 Chicagoland actors also appearing in A Christmas Carol for the first time. Chicago actor/director William Brown returns for the fifth consecutive year to stage the production hailed as 'a joyous present for the entire family'

Four countries, fourteen companies, twenty productions and programs, thirty-seven days, 342 artists and the U.S. debut of Cuba's Teatro Buendía defined the 5th Biennial Latino Theatre Festival, and marked an unprecedented success for Goodman Theatre. Resident Artistic Associate Henry Godinez curated the ambitious Festival that appeared June 19 - July 25 for an audience of more than 50,000 on both of the Goodman's stages: the 856-seat Albert and the 400-seat flexible Owen, as well as the Jay Pritzker Pavilion and Chase Promenade in Millennium Park. Highlights of this year's Festival included the U.S. debut of Cuba's acclaimed Teatro Buendía-hailed as 'highly arresting' (Chicago Tribune), 'astonishingly vivid' (Chicago Sun-Times) and 'deeply inspiring' (Time Out Chicago); the centerpiece production of The Sins of Sor Juana by Karen Zacarías, directed by Godinez and featuring screen stars Malaya Rivera Drew and Tony Plana; a weekend of bold new works in collaboration with New York's Lark Play Development Center and featuring five of Chicago's leading storefront theaters, and partnerships with the Latino Music Festival, Grant Park Music Festival, Millennium Park and Mexico 2010 presented by the Consulate General of Mexico.
