Ahktar has a knack for writing real people with real flaws, and for taking a hard look at tough, often-uncomfortable issues in our society. Per a WUWM interview, Akhtar asserts that Junk is not pessimistic, just real. "It's bleak but it's realistic, unfortunately," he says. "If you're coming to the play and you're expecting something uplifting, just be prepared."

Set in 1975 after the Fall of Saigon, this New York Times Critics' Pick is a stranger-than-fiction true love story between two refugees-who find each other on the other side of the world. Qui Nguyen, a playwright and screenwriter for Marvel Studios, deploys hip-hop, fight sequences, and up-to-the-minute pop culture references to tell his own origin story as his parents "meet cute" in the repurposed barracks of a relocation camp in Fort Chaffee, Arkansas.

The legendary story of Jane Eyre, written by Charlotte Bronte in 1847, arrives as artful, contemporary adaption by Polly Teale in Milwaukee Repertory Theater's season ending production at the Quadracci Powerhouse. Director KJ Sanchez follows Teale's lead and delves deeper into the psychology between Jane and Mr. Rochester's uninhibited, possible mad wife Bertha. The two characters, through actors, Margaret Ivey (Jane) and Rin Allen (Bertha) shadow each other throughout the production. In this adaptation, Bertha appears to mirror Jane's repressed Victorian feelings that literally ignite their lives and English homestead, Thornfield.

The production combines Victorian-era costumes with inventive staging to bring new creativity and vitality to the classic story, considered one of the most widely read novels in the English language.
