An old love can be an irresistible force, especially for people in their autumn years. Is marriage an immoveable object? 'Old Flame,' a new play by Richard Ploetz, weighs the force of an old romance against the strength of a 50-year marriage, examining our vulnerability to rediscovered passion, no matter what our age. Theater for the New City will present the piece April 24 to May 17, directed by James Glossman.
SOUND OFF Special Edition: Little Shop Of Horrors! 10 Devilish & Demonic Plays & Musicals To Devour
by Pat Cerasaro
- Apr 22, 2015
While Broadway is heaven for theatergoers around the world, especially when the season reaches its fever pitch as it is right now, it can also be hell in the right hands. And, that's a good thing. As the exceedingly well-received new play HAND TO GOD which opened earlier this month proves, audiences adore a good scare - particularly when it is supported by a rich and dynamic dramatic basis upon which the horror-show can play out, which HAND TO GOD undoubtedly has in spades (and pitchforks). Needless to say, many of the most popular and successful musicals of all time have also dealt with demonic presences - even if in the case of Broadway's two biggest hits, they are misunderstood monsters. Indeed, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA remains the longest-running show in Broadway history, approaching its 20th year on the Great White Way, while Oz-themed witch-centric musical mega-hit WICKED remains one of the hottest tickets in town. With this week's news of Hollywood heartthrob Jake Gyllenhaal starring in an upcoming Encores! special limited-run production of cult hit and famous Off-Broadway mainstay LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS - not to mention the big news of a brand new small screen version of the ultimate cult movie musical, THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, being revived for a new generation - it seems more than merely appropriate to turn our attention to the scariest, bloodiest and best horror-themed musicals to date.

Today we are continuing our expansive ongoing discussion with Tony Award-winning scenic design visionary Beowulf Boritt. Continuing the exhaustive discussion of this week's spectacular one night only concert event PARADE, Boritt outlines the visual high-points of the evening as well as offers an explanation of the impetus for many of the ideas behind the inventive design for the unique event. Additionally, Boritt opens up about his other work at Lincoln Center over the years, including Manhattan Concert Productions presentation of RAGTIME and his Tony Award-winning work on the Moss Hart drama ACT ONE, which will be shown on PBS as part of LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER later this year. Furthermore, Boritt shines a light on his multiple other current musicals running or opening soon - the revival of ON THE TOWN on Broadway, plus HAND TO GOD opening soon and Off-Broadway's CLINTON: THE MUSICAL. Plus, Boritt details his work on a dizzying array of current tours and recent mainstage mountings of musicals ranging from the national tours of ANNIE and JOSEPH & THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT to his work on LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, LITTLE DANCER, THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS in the West End and far beyond. As if all that were not enough, Boritt also looks ahead to the 2016 Tokyo production of the Harold Prince revue PRINCE OF BROADWAY and comments on rumors of an impending New York return of THE TOXIC AVENGER while sharing first news on his involvement with a number of new productions including the Keira Knightley-led revival of THERESE RAQUIN and the forthcoming revival of A BRONX TALE. All of that and much, much more in this concluding portion of our extended chat with one of Broadway's best visual artists.
