LA Phil Announces Daniel Cohen, BenGernon, and Antonio Méndez to Participate in Fellowship Program

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association has announced three conductors who will participate in the 2013/14 Dudamel Fellowship Program - Daniel Cohen, BenGernon, and Antonio Mendez. Music Director Gustavo Dudamel, together with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, created the Dudamel Fellowship Program in 2009 to provide a unique opportunity for promising young conductors from around the world to develop their craft and enrich their musical experience through personal mentorship and participation in the LA Phil's orchestral, education and community programs.

American Youth Symphony to Perform Timo Andres' BATHTUB SHRINE in West Coast Premiere, 10/6

The acclaimed American Youth Symphony (AYS), one of the nation's leading professional training orchestras for musicians ages 15 to 27, launches its 49th season with a free concert featuring the highly anticipated West Coast premiere of Timothy Andres' humorous Bathtub Shrine, Tchaikovsky's elegant Variations on a Rococo Theme, showcasing rising star Allan Steele, AYS's Principal Cello, and Berlioz' epic Symphony fantastique on Sunday, October 6, 2013, 7 pm, at UCLA's Royce Hall. Music Director Alexander Treger, currently in his 16th season leading AYS, conducts the 106-member orchestra, noted for its innovative programming and inspiring performances.

NY Philharmonic's 'Insights Series' Now Free; 2013-14 Lineup Announced

Beginning with the 2013-14 season, the New York Philharmonic's Insights Series - in which artists and experts will explore some of the season's themes and concerts - will now be free, and take place at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center. This season's events will include discussions with Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow during his farewell season (October 23); composer-conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and violinist Leila Josefowicz (October 28), who will discuss Mr. Salonen's Violin Concerto, written for Ms. Josefowicz (which they will perform with the Philharmonic in its New York Concert Premiere, October 30-November 5); Music Director Alan Gilbert and Executive Director Matthew VanBesien on the state of the Philharmonic (March 3, 2014); The Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence Yefim Bronfman (May 20, 2014), who will talk about Beethoven's piano concertos (which he will perform during The Beethoven Piano Concertos: A Philharmonic Festival, June 11-28, 2014); and discussions relating to the NY PHIL BIENNIAL, the details of which will be announced at a later date.

Renowned conductor Gerard Schwarz and his hand-picked team of 'all-star' classical musicians from across the United States come together to form a new made-for-television concert series.All-Star Orchestra premieres nationwide in September on public television (check local listings), and airs in New York today, September 8, 2013 at 12:30 p.m. on THIRTEEN and continues for seven consecutive weeks. Maestro Schwarz has taken a page from Major League Baseball's playbook, creating a team of the finest orchestral athletes from top orchestras in the United States. Miller Theatre Opens Season with COMPOSER PORTRAITS, 10/10

The music of Georg Friedrich Haas possesses “an otherworldly beauty,” writes The New Yorker. His compositional toolbox includes exotic scales and alternative tunings. He often draws on centuries past for inspiration, as in this program, which includes homages to the music of Desprez and the poetry of Sappho. Newly appointed to the Columbia University faculty, Haas will participate in an onstage discussion about his music during the performance. After his first Composer Portrait in 2009, The New York Times wrote: “One of the pleasures of frequent concertgoing is discovering an exciting new or little-known work. The American premiere of 'In Vain,' a kaleidoscopic masterpiece by Austrian composer Georg Friedrich Haas, proved an exhilarating experience.”

CSO Resound Announces 14th Release, VERDI'S OTHELLO

CSO Resound, the independent record label of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association (CSOA), announces its 14th release: Verdi's Otello, featuring Music Director Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO), recorded live during critically acclaimed and sold-out performances at Symphony Center in Chicago in April 2011.

Miller Theatre at Columbia University School of the Arts Presents Pop Up Concerts, 9/10

Bring a friend, grab a drink, and join some of today's most interesting performers onstage at Miller Theatre on select Tuesday evenings. Launched in February 2012, Miller's popular Pop-Up Concerts kicks off its third season this fall, continuing to provide free, informal performances in the early evening. The unique format allows the theater to test out new ideas and introduce new performers before they hit the Miller mainstage. Free libations from Harlem Brewing Company contribute to the laid-back ambiance. All concerts start at6p.m. Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis, and doors open at5:30p.m

RPS Young Musicians Programme Awards Grants of £81,000 to Young Musicians

The Royal Philharmonic Society, through its Young Musicians Programme, has made a series of grants totaling £81,500 to young composers and performers, underlining the Society's commitment to encouraging and recognizing the next generation of talented young artists. Reflecting the many, and increasing, practical and artistic needs of music students and nascent professionals, the RPS Young Musicians' Programme provides wide- ranging support including: assistance with the purchase of instruments, enabling British instrumentalists to study abroad, support for outstanding young string players and organists, further study opportunity for singers, mentoring by leading classical artists for exceptional musicians at the start of their professional careers and support for young composers through special commissions.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra Names Miles Maner as New Contrabassoon/Bassoon

Music Director Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) announce the appointment of Miles Maner as the CSO's new contrabassoon/bassoon, effective July 29, 2013. Maner joins the CSO having served as associate principal bassoon/contrabassoon of the Kansas City Symphony since 2010. He also serves as principal bassoon at the Breckenridge Music Festival in Colorado, a post he has held since 2010.

Annapolis Symphony Orchestra Announces 2013-2014 Season

The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is pleased to announce its 2013-2014 concert season. Under the continued artistic leadership of Music Director José-Luis Novo, the season will feature the Lexus Classic Series, a combination of five classical concerts, as well as a Holiday Pops concert sponsored by PNC Wealth Management, a Family concert and a free summer Pops in the Park concert presented by Lexus. All concerts are performed at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis, MD with the exception of the Pops in the Park concert which is held at Quiet Waters Park amphitheater, also in Annapolis.

Artistic Director of Teatro San Martin Ernesto Schoo Passes Away at 87

Informamos con gran pesar que esta mañana fallecio, a sus 87 años, Ernesto Schoo, destacado intelectual argentino que fuera Director General y Artistico del Teatro San Martin de agosto de 1996 a mayo de 1998. Entre sus logros en la direccion puede subrayarse, por ejemplo, la primera edicion de Ciclo de Conciertos de Musica Contemporanea, que sigue vigente hasta el presente.
