The fifth longest-running play in the West End, The 39 Steps is currently being performed country-wide as part of its tenth anniversary tour. This multiple award-winning comedy was originally adapted by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon from Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 film of the same name for a cast of only four people. It had humble beginnings and played to small audiences in village halls across the North of England. Some ten years later, Patrick Barlow rewrote the script whilst keeping the intimate nature and genius simplicity already found. It is this version, albeit with different directors in different venues, that has had great success.

Putting on a play or musical is a daunting enough task, but to do it with only a handful of people and no budget, is something only the most passionate (or crazy) individuals can attempt. Brittany Danyel is a little of both - along with her partners-in-crime, the eminently talented Hanna Mitchell and Ezra Eels, Danyel, using the production name 'The 3 Maskateers,' has made an iconic, funny play even more uproarious. Their manic story of Hitchcockian espionage finishes its run this weekend at the OYES Theatre in Ojai and if you like knockabout, frenzied comedy, this is the show for you.
What do you get when you combine Alfred Hitchcock with Monty Python? The 39 Steps, a riotous adaptation of Hitchcock's memorable 1935 comic suspense film that features a cast of four actors and a minimum of everything else. The play made its debut last weekend at the OYES Theatre in Ojai and despite a shoestring budget, the creators manage to pull together the uproarious, fast-moving spy story into one of the more entertaining productions of the year.
Following a ten-year hiatus from the London stage, A Christmas Carol at the Noel Coward Theatre marks Jim Broadbent's return to the West End. Patrick Barlow's take on the Charles Dickens classic is unlike anything I've ever seen before - which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Although Broadbent's Scrooge is still somewhat cold-hearted, he is by no means as cruel as other depictions.
Brian 'Q' Quinn, from famed comedy troupe The Tenderloins and truTV's hit series IMPRACTICAL JOKERS, made a special celebrity guest appearance in the two-time Tony Award winning hilarious hit comedy 39 STEPS this past Friday, December 4th at the Union Square Theatre. Scroll down for photos!
