BWW Reviews: NYMF's HELD MOMENTARILY is an Interesting Work in Progress

When I think of NYMF, I typically think of quirky musicals that would otherwise slip through the cracks of mainstream theatre. HELD MOMENTARILY: A NEW MUSICAL, with book, music, and lyrics by Oliver Houser, fits perfectly into this box, and given its previous performance history at 2014's New York International Fringe Festival, that is no surprise.

HELD MOMENTARILY - the new musical featuring India Carney, the singer and actress who was a 2015 finalist on NBC-TV's "The Voice"- has announced a second extension for its engagement at The New York Musical Theatre Festival. Scheduled to run through Monday, July 27, 2015, the production has added an additional performance on Thursday, July 23 at 9:00 PM at PTC Performance Space (555 West 42nd Street in New York). HELD MOMENTARILY features book, music and lyrics by Oliver Houser, was developed by Hunter Bird and includes additional material by Hunter Bird and James Zebooker. India Carney - the singer and actress who was a finalist on NBC-TV's "The Voice" earlier in 2015 - will return to the cast of the new musical HELD MOMENTARILY for The New York Musical Theatre Festival production from July 20 to July 27, 2015. Carney was in the original cast when the show premiered last year. HELD MOMENTARILY will run at PTC Performance Space (555 West 42nd Street in New York). The New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) announced today its additional selections for NYMF 2015. Acappella, Claudio Quest, HeadVoice, Held Momentarily, Moses Man, Napoleon, Real Men, a musical for guys and the women who put up with them; Songs for the Fallen, Tonya & Nancy: The Rock Opera and Wearing Black join the previously announced new musicals that will be presented at the 2015 New York Musical Theatre Festival from July 7, 2015 to July 27, 2015.

'Held Momentarily' is a poignant new musical comedy about making connections, living in the moment, and moving on in life. Conceived by a group of classmates from LaGuardia Arts High School (the 'Fame' school), the piece was originally workshopped in January 2014 at The Producers' Club, continued on to the New York International Fringe Festival at The Sheen Center, and will now extend to the FringeNYC Encore Series at SoHo Playhouse, to be helmed by director Hunter Bird and produced by Lionel Christian and Marielle Young, today, September 11-21.

Broadway stars Barbara Walsh (Company) and Stephanie D'Abruzzo (Avenue Q) join Bill Connington, the star of ZOMBIE, in performing in a benefit reading of Oscar Wilde's classic comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest ("A Trivial Comedy for Serious People"). Also in the cast are William Connell (The Coast of Utopia), Vivienne Cleary (Peace Warriors), Annmarie Benedict (Robeson), D.H. Johnson (Dodsworth), and Oliver Houser (Spring Awakening, Virginia Rep).
