NAKED LUNCH: THE MUSICAL Comes to St. Sebastian Players Theatre
by Julie Musbach - Apr 20, 2017

Like many undergraduates at Yale University in the mid-1960s, Bill Hannay was fond of avant garde literature, especially if it tested people's commitment to the constitutional principle of freedom of expression. He followed, for example, the obscenity trials over the publication of the novel Naked Lunch underway in Los Angeles and Boston. The latter turned out to one of the last landmark decisions on obscenity in the 20th Century. Hannay's passion for the law led him to a career as an attorney, and he has been a partner at Chicago's Schiff Hardin LLP for 30 years, but another life-long passion - for the theater - never waned, either.

Leslie C. Youngblood Signs Two-Book Deal with Disney-Hyperion
by Christina Mancuso - Apr 10, 2017

After hundreds of query letters and nearly as many rejections notifications, the literary world is poised to embrace a new literary talent. Rochester native, Leslie C. Youngblood, has signed a two-book deal with publisher Disney-Hyperion for her middle-grade novel 'Love Like Sky' and its sequel to be released in 2018. 'Love Like Sky' follows Georgie as she tries to find her place in her 'blended-up' family, with both her parents remarried and a new teenage stepsister she'll do anything to win over. When a devastating illness strikes her stepsister, Georgie will do whatever it takes to make her better and bring her family together. Middle grade is fiction aimed at children between the ages of eight through twelve. Laura Schreiber at Disney-Hyperion bought Youngboold's debut property, while John Rudolph at Dystel, Goderich & Bourret orchestrated the deal for worldwide rights. A former Atlanta Tribune Columnist, Youngblood grew up in the 19th Ward community of Rochester, New York, holds an BA from Georgia State University and earned an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She spent several years as an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at Lincoln University in Iowa, lectured at Mississippi State University, UNC-Greensboro, and the University of Ghana at Legon in West Africa. Dedicated to perfecting her narrative craft, Youngblood won the Go On Girl! Book Club Aspiring Writer Award in 2010. She attended the Norman Mailer Writers' Colony in 2011. In 2014, she was awarded the prestigious Elizabeth Ames Residency at Yaddo, where she became known for her literary productivity of writing 5,000 words a day. Youngblood also holds the Lorian Hemingway Short Story Prize, a Hurston Wright Fellowship, and is the recipient of the Room of Her Own Foundation's Orlando Short Story Prize. Her short story, 'Poor Girls' Palace,' was published in the Indiana Review, as well as Kweli Journal, which Youngblood presented at The Writers Room in New York City in March 2017. 'I write characters not genre. Wherever those characters fit. I create a platform for characters to come to life, have a voice, share a journey, and evolve a unique narrative. The only Plan B I ever had was working on my Plan A: Write. Agent. Deal.' Currently, Youngblood resides in Rochester, where she is editing 'Love Like Sky,' teaching creative writing at Rochester's Writers and Books, and administrating the Samuel C. Griffin Memorial Fund in memory of her slain brother, which supports Family and Friends of Murdered Children, Victims of Violence, and Boys and Girls Club of Rochester. Youngblood is represented by Flickeria. Flickeria is a New York City-based boutique production agency managing emerging artist, creating dynamic content, and strategizing a global presence for new voices and innovative vision in art and media.

BWW Review: It's Norman Mailer Vs. Feminism in Wooster Group's THE TOWN HALL AFFAIR
by Michael Dale - Feb 18, 2017

It would be nice to be able take in The Wooster Group's intriguing docu-theatre piece, THE TOWN HALL AFFAIR, as a look at the grotesquely blatant brand sexism of nearly 50 years ago that we have since outgrown. Sadly, this glimpse at a carnival-like event disguised as a serious debate on the subject of, as it was known at the time, women's lib, is likely to remind audience members of current headlines.

SEVEN RIGHTS FOR CITIZEN SLACKERS is Released
by Christina Mancuso - Feb 6, 2017

With the ongoing threat of social turmoil, it is crucial for citizens to be aware of the human rights context of all important decisions made by government, business, NGOs, and educational institutions so they can encourage and even guide their organizations to achieving their highest goals, all while holding them accountable. As a former lawyer and teacher, the author laments the fact that human rights are not taught and defined as human potentials. 'Seven Rights for Citizen Slackers,' 40 years in the making, presents a unique perspective on human rights.

BWW Interview: More Than a Mere Footnote: A Conversation with MAMA'S BOY Playwright Rob Urbinati, Star Betsy Aidem, and Director Brian P. Allen
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Oct 28, 2015

Some images are seared into the communal consciousness forever. The tragic assassination of John F. Kennedy and its tumultuous aftermath are just such indelibly tragic events which haunt memory. Playwright Rob Urbinati, whose new work Mama's Boy will receive its world premiere at Portland's Good Theater on October 29, 2015, was six years old in November 1963 and recalls seeing Lee Harvey Oswald murdered on television. It was an image which would resurface in his writing decades later. Urbinati's new play focuses on Marguerite Oswald, her two sons Lee Harvey and Robert, and Lee's wife Marina in the year prior to the assassination and in the days after, offering an unusual prism on the events through the eyes of Marguerite. The play, however, is not really an historical drama, but rather a domestic drama in which Urbinati, Actress Betsy Aidem, and Good Artistic Director Brian P. Allen have tried to imagine the family context from which the Oswald phenomenon emerged.
