Last week, I created my Tony Categories that SHOULD Exist and posted nominations in ten categories. You spent the week voting, and now it's time to announce the winners! It's Tony Awards Season again, and I've been pondering the things about theatre that I appreciate the most. Surely, score and libretto and scenery and (of course) acting. But what about the ensembles, the special effects, the fight scenes, and the on-stage chemistry of so many sexy couples? Sure, the Tonys can't cover EVERYTHING. But the shows deserve accolades for more than just the traditional Tony honors. So I present to you my 2011 Alternative Awards -- aka Tony categories that SHOULD exist -- for the 2010-11 Broadway Season.

This year's 56th Annual Drama Desk Awards, scheduled to take place in May, will undergo a major overhaul designed to enhance its national visibility and outreach and provide all segments of New York Theater a larger national footprint than ever before. Announcement of those changes were made public yeterday, February 24, at a News Conference in the Inc Lounge. As reported, one of these changes includes the televising of the ceremony on Ovation, hosted by Harvey Fierstein.

The readings of Alyss, a new musical retelling of Alice in Wonderland by Mark Wilk and Marilyn Michaels, that were scheduled for May 20 and 21 have been postponed until further notice. The reason given for the postponement is that an illness within the company has prevented them from presenting the readings. No rescheduling has yet occurred.

On Monday, April 26, Matt Doyle (Spring Awakening, Bye Bye Birdie), Emma Hunton (Spring Awakening) and Krysta Rodriguez (The Addams Family), Kelli O'Hara, Steven Pasquale, De'Adre Aziza and Greg Naughton headlined the NewMusicalTheatre.com Launch Concert at NYC's (Le) Poisson Rouge. BroadwayWorld was there to capture the evening.
