Taking time to study abroad is a common practice in the modern day. It's not uncommon to hear a student say they wished they could stay at their destination forever. Well, young Barton Carter did exactly that when he visited Spain in 1936 and his desire to stay led to over 4,000 lives being saved.

CONCORD, N.H. - Barton Carter came from a wealthy New England family and disappeared while fighting in the Spanish Civil War when he was 23 years old. More than six decades later, a dream inspired his niece, author Nancy Barton Carter Clough, to tell his story.

The Glimmerglass Festival held its 2012 Spring Gala GL!MMERATA! on April 10 at The Metropolitan Club in Manhattan. The glittering evening benefitted the company's Young Artists and Summer Internship programs.
