BWW Review: Stray Dog Theatre's Provocative Production of DISTRACTED

As technology races ever forward, we find ourselves continually bombarded with requests for our time. Personal assistants are no longer actual people, but handheld devices that have become our lifeline to our work and families. So, it's not surprising that we've all become a little preoccupied. Then, when you factor in how ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) has been reclassified as ADHD, with a much broader and wider-reaching list of symptoms, it's easy to see why so many people, especially children, are falling under the umbrella of a positive diagnosis. That's the world examined by playwright Lisa Loomer's brilliant comedy/drama DISTRACTED, and Stray Dog Theatre has mounted a terrific production that's required viewing, not only for parents, but for anyone struggling to deal with the demands of modern life.

SINKER, EYE ON THE SPARROW, et al. Nominated for Kevin Kline Awards

Twenty-two St. Louis theater companies are represented in the nominations for the Sixth Annual Kevin Kline Awards. Thirty plays and musicals produced in the St. Louis area during 2010 now share 112 nominations in 22 different categories for the coveted award.

Stray Dog Theatre Presents DISTRACTED 2/3-19

Stray Dog Theatre presents DISTRACTED, Lisa Loomer's fast-paced and comic look at 'parenting in the age of the Internet and Ritalin.' This roller coaster comedy takes off as nine-year-old Jesse's parents attempt to find answers to his 'distractions'. A hilarious, provocative, and touching look at a modern family facing the epidemic dilemma of our 24/7 nonstop world: how to define what really matters.

BWW Review: NonProphet Theater Company's Production of RECKLESS

There are a number of unique holiday-themed shows currently playing in local theatres, and the NonProphet Theater Company has joined in the yuletide fray with their current production of RECKLESS. Playwright Craig Lucas has crafted a strangely affecting little tale that takes any number of twists and turns as it lurches forward through time, playfully confounding expectations along its path toward a surprisingly satisfying conclusion.

St. Louis Actors' Studio Presents NOVEMBER 10/8-10/24

St. Louis Actors' Studio opens its fourth season, themed Angels and Demons, with David Mamet's oval office hit NOVEMBER. It's a Presidential election year, and incumbent Charles Smith's chances for reelection are looking grim. Approval ratings are down, his money's running out, and nuclear war might be imminent. Though his staff has thrown in the towel and his wife has begun to prepare for her post-White House life, Chuck isn't ready to give up just yet. Amidst the biggest fight of his political career, the President has to find time to pardon a couple of turkeys - saving them from the slaughter before Thanksgiving - and this simple PR event inspires Smith to risk it all in attempt to win back public support.

BWW Reviews; St. Louis Actors' Studio Presents Hilarious Production of NOVEMBER

While the chief target of David Mamet's hilariously funny play, NOVEMBER, may not in actuality be former president George W. Bush, Bush's uncanny knack for coming off less than intelligent, and his frequent, and often creative malapropisms, are clearly evident. But, really this isn't about any one particular presidency, but a delicious skewering of modern politics as a whole. Mamet's work is given a terrific production by the St. Louis Actors' Studio, which features top notch comic performances and tight, fast-paced direction.

October 2010 will mark the beginning of St. Louis Actors' Studio's fourth season, themed Angels and Demons. Echo Theatre Company Presents GOD'S EAR 7/30-8/15

When a couple's son drowns, their marriage begins to dissolve under the weight of grief that follows his death. As they grow farther and farther apart, their daughter is emotionally abandoned. Can the Tooth Fairy, a life-size G.I. Joe doll and a cross-dressing flight attendant help them discover solace? GOD'S EAR is an unfolding of the human heart told through a poignant and hilarious look at the language we use when we cannot bear to speak.

BWW Reviews: Echo Theatre Company's Production of GOD'S EAR

Jenny Schwartz's play GOD'S EAR is an intriguing work, chock full of linguistic twists and turns that manage to illuminate rather than obscure, even though they appear to tumble forth with seemingly reckless abandon. Schwartz takes a tragic situation, in this case the loss of a child and the erosion of a married couple's feelings in the aftermath, and peppers the dialogue with exhilarating, and at times exasperating, flurries of cliches and non-sequiturs. It's like some weirdly compelling word game, and I like the fact that Echo Theatre Company has chosen this particular work to begin their 2010 season, because it represents the kind of challenging, and ultimately rewarding, productions that have become their stock in trade.

Stray Dog Theatre's Production of OUR TOWN Closes 6/26

Stray Dog Theatre presents Thornton Wilder's OUR TOWN, considered to be one of the most important American plays of all time. The brillliant, Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece comes alive again. More than any American classic, this play stands for simple truths and eternal connections. Return to Grover's Corners for a fresh take on the play that changed theatre history! A poignant family tale that reminds us of what is truly important in life.

BWW Reviews: OUR TOWN at Stray Dog

Thornton Wilder's venerable American classic OUR TOWN is an interesting character study, focusing its attention on a small New England town and the changes that occur to various characters as time passes. This was an era when entire families put down roots and never gave a thought to moving, with children growing up and taking over the family businesses. Stray Dog Theatre is currently presenting the play, and though it's a flawed presentation, a game cast does a fairly good job of bringing Wilder's characters to life.
