BWW Reviews: CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION at the Seattle Rep

I've said it before and I'm sure I'll say it again since it keeps coming up, I personally cannot stand other people's therapy on stage. And if you must put up some theatrical therapy, at least frame it in an interesting story. And while the Seattle Rep's current production of "Circle Mirror Transformation" isn't necessarily author Annie Baker's therapy, it is the therapy for her five characters and no, they're not that interesting.

ACT Announces IN THE NEXT ROOM, New Voices & More for Upcoming Events

ACT - A Contemporary Theatre offers up something for everyone! Sarah Ruhl's tender, electric new comedy hit, In the Next Room, or the vibrator play lights up the Mainstage, while the Central Heating Lab keeps things cooking with steamy performances all month long!

BWW Reviews: IN THE NEXT ROOM, OR THE VIBRATOR PLAY at ACT

Right off the bat let's just get out there what Sarah Ruhl's "In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play" is about. It's in the title for Pete's sake. Yes, the show is about vibrators and their use in the 1880's. Yes, THOSE kinds of devices and activities that usually are not discussed in polite society. So I'll try and be as delicate as I can for my more sensitive readers. But beyond the obvious, the show deals with a small group of people as they come to grips with … er … I mean … get in touch with their … um … DAMN, this is harder than I … uh … well, they discover more about their true feelings. Yes the show is slightly naughty but in a delightful way with depth and humor and ACT's production is presented with beauty and skill.

A Contemporary Theatre serves up plenty of new works in the month of July, starting with the continuation of the very sexy, 'very now' World Premiere of Pilgrims Musa and Sheri in the New World by acclaimed local playwright Yussef El Guindi, followed by scorching performances produced from The Central Heating Lab: Pinter Fortnightly, featuring a first for Seattle audiences - a reading of Grace by Doug Lucie; the return of The Love Markets with Summer Nacht; and the debut of REPRESENT!

BWW Reviews: O LOVELY GLOWWORM OR SCENES OF GREAT BEAUTY from New Century Theatre Company

What do goats dream about? That is a question that has plagued mankind … well … not really at all. But New Century Theater Company is endeavoring to answer just such a question with their latest show, "O Lovely Glowworm or Scenes of Great Beauty" by Glen Berger. And this existential question is handled in as artfully and skillfully a way as to create a production of near perfection on every level.

BWW Reviews: WITTENBERG from Seattle Shakespeare Company

Seattle Shakespeare Company is currently coupling their powerhouse production of "Hamlet" with an amusing look into Hamlet's college days with "Wittenberg" by David Davalos. And while it may not pack the punch of the main event it is a smart and funny view into the formation of the attitudes of the young prince.

Seattle Shakespeare Company Presents WITTENBERG, 11/16-12/5

Two Hamlets on the stage at the same time? Well...almost. In addition to their production of Shakespeare's Hamlet, Seattle Shakespeare Company is presenting a contemporary comedy about Hamlet's college days - Wittenberg. Both Hamlet and Wittenberg will run in repertory at the Center House Theatre with several opportunities to see both plays on the same day.

BWW Reviews: ON THE NATURE OF DUST from NCTC

Fledgling theater group New Century Theatre Company is presenting its current show at ACT's Falls Theatre with the world premiere of company member Stephanie Timm's new play, "On the Nature of Dust". And while a tad preachy at times, the show makes me wish that half of the new emerging voices in the theater community (both in Seattle and abroad) were as engaging and fresh as Timm.

New Century Theatre Company's ON THE NATURE OF DUST Closes 5/30

New Century Theatre Company (NCTC), under the leadership of Co-Artistic Directors Hans Altwies and Paul Morgan Stetler, with Executive Director Michael Patten, launches its second season with company playwright Stephanie Timm's world premiere play On the Nature of Dust, directed by Kathleen Collins.
