Don't ever underestimate the importance of chemistry when it comes to pulling off an opera performance--and there was animal magnetism galore in the Met's revival of its Willy Decker production of Verdi's LA TRAVIATA. From the moment tenor Michael Fabiano came on stage, at Friday's performance of LA TRAVIATA at the Met, everyone perked up--even the evening's Violetta, Sonya Yoncheva, who had already been giving a strong performance as Verdi's “Lost One,” suddenly seemed to have a gleam in her eye that wasn't present before.

Kelli O'Hara, Jonas Kaufmann, Joyce DiDonato Will Highlight Met Opera's 2017-18 Season

The Metropolitan Opera's 2017-18 season will feature 220 performances of 26 works, including two Met premieres, one co-commissioned by the company and one an older masterpiece having its first Met performances; a variety of repertory favorites, three in new productions; and performances of Verdi's towering concert work for soloists, orchestra, and chorus, the Requiem. Of note, Broadway star Kelli O'Hara is set to return to the Met in Così fan tutte this season.

Brandon Jovanovich, Jamie Barton, Katarina Dalayman, and Eric Owens complete the all-star cast, and Mark Elder conducts.  The Ridgefield Playhouse and Craig's Fine Jewelry Live in HD Series presents an encore performance of The Met Opera in HD Dvo?ak's Rusalka on Sunday, February 26 at 12 p.m.  In the depths of a lively lake, Rusalka, water nymph and daughter of the ruling water sprite, bemoans her fate. Her eye has been caught by a dashing prince, but being a nymph she cannot have him. Going against the wishes of her father, she consults with the witch Jezibaba, who teaches her a spell to become mortal. The only caveat; she will be mute and, therefore unable to express her love. If the Prince betrays her, they'll both be damned for eternity. Of course, she takes her chances, which throw her into an adventure of jealousy, exile, love and redemption that will change her forever more.

The Richard Tucker Music Foundation's annual gala, one of the opera world's most star-studded evenings, returns home to New York's Carnegie Hall after an absence of more than a quarter of a century this Sunday, October 30, and for the first time, audiences both in the U.S. and abroad will have the opportunity to watch it live (6pm ET/3pm PT). Thanks to a new partnership with medici.tv, the gala concert will be webcast live free of charge both on medici.tv and on medici.tv's Facebook page, and made available for on-demand viewing for 90 days. In addition, the Richard Tucker Music Foundation continues its collaboration with WQXR 105.9 FM, New York's classical radio station, which will broadcast the performance to listeners in the New York metropolitan region and beyond on November 18 at 9pm ET/6pm PT. Donizetti's ebullient comedy The Elixir of Love sets a celebratory tone as Houston Grand Opera's (HGO) 62nd season opener on October 21. The colorful production features tenor Dimitri Pittas and soprano Nicole Heaston, as well as the HGO debut of eminent English conductor Jane Glover. Performances run through November 4.
