Brooklyn Tavern Theater, led by composer/lyricist/writer Dan Furman, is presenting 'Impossible but True,' a 'tavern musical' inspired by Washington Irving's Rip Van Winkle story, through October 29 at Franklin 820 in Crown Heights, Brooklyn and in Manhattan at Uncle Charlie's, 139 East 45th Street. The lab will feature performances by an ensemble of Prospect alumni artists, and newcomers: Joanna Carpenter, Christopher Cherry, Diego Diaz, Ellis Gage, Alyssa Gomez, Sevan Greene, Jiho Kang, Patty Nieman, Allison Posner, Alicia Thomas, and Jeff Williams.

Composer-Lyricist-Bookwriter Mary Liz McNamara is currently working on Body and Soul based on the 2009 documentary by filmmaker Alice Elliott. Excerpts from Body and Soul were seen at New York Theater Barn in October 2014. Awards: 2013 Bistro Award for Songwriting, 2011 BMI Foundation Harrington Award for creative achievement in musical theater, two MAC awards and six ASCAP PLUS awards. Mary Liz is a frequent NYC performer, and her songs are performed by cabaret and musical theater artists across the country. She is a member of the BMI Musical Theater Workshop (as a composer/lyricist and a librettist), and about a million other performing arts unions and organizations. Her song 'Bacon' was used in an episode of 'So You Think You Can Dance.'
t may not be like getting a gift on each of the 12 Days of Christmas, but for cabaret and musical theater lovers, the 6th Annual Urban Stages Winter Rhythms series--presented over a dozen nights at the not-for-profit Off-Broadway theatre on 259 West 30th Street--could be the closest thing to opening a daily present by the tree. From December 2-14 (no shows on Dec. 9), more than 100 singers, musicians, and songwriters will perform in an eclectic mix of 20 shows including one-night-only group shows, excerpts from new musicals, solo shows, open mics, late night spotlights, and family matinees, with all the proceeds from ticket sales dedicated to the Urban Stages On Tour Outreach Program that brings more than 200 free multicultural theater and music programs to elementary and middle school age children and their families in libraries and schools throughout NYC five boroughs.
