The 35th annual Mississippi Picnic, held yesterday in New York in Central Park, had something for everyone. Alexis Brown (Madison) is a former special assistant and events coordinator at the Mississippi Development Authority and state coordinator for the picnic since 1992 and she once again had a wonderful event planned out for New York City. Governor Phil Bryant and his wife Deborah were there to support the event.

The Frist Center for the Visual Arts' popular summer concert series Frist Fridays kicks off Friday, June 27 with a performance by The Long Players. Now in its twelfth season, Frist Fridays take place on the final Friday of June, July and August from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Center's Turner Courtyard. Patrons are invited to enjoy an evening of live music, light snacks and beverages as well as the diverse exhibitions on view in the Frist Center's galleries. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to the events. Frist Fridays take place rain or shine.

Things are heating up for the inaugural Emerge Film Festival, opening on June 13! The Festival board of directors has released the final film schedule, including more than 40 short, documentary and feature films from Maine, the U.S. and the world. Today, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts announced the launch of Blue Star Museums, a collaboration between the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to the nation's active duty military personnel including National Guard and Reserve and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2014. Leadership support has been provided by MetLife Foundation through Blue Star Families. The program provides families an opportunity to enjoy the nation's cultural heritage and learn more about their new communities after a military move. The exhibition will be on display from today, May 9-November 2, 2014, in the Conte Community Arts Gallery, which is free to the public. Organized by Frist Center Curator Katie Delmez, American Ballads demonstrates that Stuart is a master storyteller not only through his songs, but also through his revealing photographs.
