Westport Country Playhouse will open its 2018 Season with an uplifting tale of bravery, pride, and sisterhood, "Flyin' West," written by Pearl Cleage and directed by Seret Scott, playing May 29 through June 16.  This year marks the historic theater's 88th season.

Chris Sarandon, Joanna Gleason, and More to Appear at Inaugural Sondheim Awards

On June 4, students and educators from across Connecticut and Rhode Island will gather at the Shubert Theatre of New Haven for the first annual Stephen Sondheim Awards, which will be hosted by Hamilton's Solea Pfeiffer and Ryan Vasquez. The Sondheim Awards are presented by Broadway Method Academy (BMA), in association with the Shubert Theatre and Westport Country Playhouse.

Westport Country Playhouse Presents Sunday Symposium for 'Flyin' West'

Westport Country Playhouse's Sunday Symposium on June 3, following a 3 p.m. performance of Pearl Cleage's play "Flyin' West," will feature guest speaker Michele Mitchell, associate professor of history at New York University. The Playhouse Sunday Symposium program is free and open to the public. Mitchell will engage in a conversation about the play with David Kennedy, Playhouse associate artistic director.

Broadway Method Academy Announces Stephen Sondheim Award Nominees

Broadway Method Academy (BMA), in association with the Shubert Theatre of New Haven and Westport Country Playhouse, is proud to announce the nominees for the Stephen Sondheim Awards. The black-tie gala will take place on June 4 at 7:30 pm at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, CT.  The program's mission is to recognize excellence in high school musical theater.

BWW Review: RIGOLETTO at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion

On May 12, 2018, Los Angeles Opera presented a searing rendition of RIGOLETTO, Giuseppe Verdi's dark tale of curses and murder. Recently, General Director Placido Domingo said of this work, 'I can think of no opera that better demonstrates the power of deeply emotional music melded with incredibly gripping drama.'

Westport Country Playhouse Receives National Endowment For The Arts Grant

Westport Country Playhouse has been awarded a $15,000 Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for the autumn production of Matthew Greene's "Thousand Pines," a world premiere from the Playhouse's New Works Circle Initiative.  Directed by Austin Pendleton, the drama will run from Oct. 30 through Nov. 17.

'Luck Be a Lady.' 'My Heart is So Full of You.' 'A Secretary is Not a Toy.' We know and love Frank Loesser, composer. But 'Snug as a Bug in a Rug?' 'I Get the Neck of the Chicken?' 'Bloop, Bleep?' 92Y's 48th season of Lyrics & Lyricists culminates with a look at the lesser-known side of Loesser - his Hollywood career collaborating with such composers as Hoagy Carmichael, Jule Style, Burton Lane and Jimmy McHugh - as well as a fresh look at songs from Guys and Dolls and his Broadway best, in Frank Loesser: Lyricist. L&L favorite David Loud, who most recently helmed acclaimed shows celebrating Stephen Sondheim and Cole Porter, returns as artistic director and host, with a cast featuring Farah Alvin (It Shoulda Been You, Nine); Lewis Cleale (The Book of Mormon, Spamalot); Laura Darrell (Encores! The Golden Apple; The Vineyard Theater Kid Victory); Samantha Massell (Fiddler on the Roof); and James Snyder (In Transit, If/Then, Encores! Grand Hotel).

The Public Announces Cast for FIRE IN DREAMLAND; Kyle Beltran, Enver Gjokaj and More

The Public Theater (Artistic Director, Oskar Eustis; Executive Director, Patrick Willingham) announced complete casting today for the New York premiere of FIRE IN DREAMLAND, written by Rinne Groff. Directed by Marissa Wolf, FIRE IN DREAMLAND continues The Public's Astor Anniversary Season at their landmark downtown home on Lafayette Street, celebrating 50 years of new work and the 50th Anniversary of HAIR. FIRE IN DREAMLAND begins performances on Tuesday, June 19 and runs through Sunday, August 5 in The Public's Anspacher Theater.

Westport Country Playhouse Presents Musical HARRY THE DIRTY DOG

Westport Country Playhouse will present the musical, "Harry the Dirty Dog," as part of its Family Festivities Series for two performances on Sunday, May 6, at 1 p.m., and 4 p.m.  Based on the bestselling book written by Gene Zion and illustrated by Margaret Bloy Graham, the one-hour production is produced by ArtsPower and appropriate for grades K through 2.  Tickets are $20.

Westport Country Playhouse Receives Gift From Bigelow Foundation

Westport Country Playhouse has received a $150,000 gift from the Eunice and David Bigelow Foundation for a new lighting communication system.  Due to the speed of advancements in computer technology, the lighting system installed during the Playhouse's 2005 renovation is now almost obsolete.

Westport Country Playhouse Announces Script In Hand Playreading On April 23

Westport Country Playhouse will present a Script in Hand playreading of the comedy, "Breaking Legs" by Tom Dulack, on Monday, April 23, at 7 p.m.  The reading will be directed by Anne Keefe, Playhouse associate artist and curator of the playreading series. Tickets are $20 each.

Yale Repertory Theatre (James Bundy, Artistic Director; Victoria Nolan, Managing Director) presents KISS by Guillermo Calderon, directed by Evan Yionoulis, April 27-May 19, at Yale Repertory Theatre (1120 Chapel Street). Opening Night is Thursday, May 3.

Westport Country Playhouse Presents HOW I BECAME A PIRATE

Westport Country Playhouse will present the musical, "How I Became a Pirate," as part of its Family Festivities Series for two performances on Sunday, April 15, at 1 p.m., and 4 p.m.  Based on the bestselling book written by Melinda Long and illustrated by David Shannon, the one-hour production is produced by Dallas Children's Theater and appropriate for ages five and up.  Tickets are $20.

Westport Country Playhouse Hosts 2018 Season Kick-off Party On April 7

Westport Country Playhouse will host a 2018 Season Kick-off Party on Saturday, April 7, from 5 to 8 p.m., offering a fun atmosphere with food trucks, beer tastings, exhibits, and special ticket discounts. In addition, a "Sneak Peek" of the upcoming season will be hosted by Mark Lamos, Playhouse artistic director, at 6:30 p.m.  The "Sneak Peek" will feature guests representing all of the upcoming productions, including playwrights, directors, and designers. Admission is free and open to the public.

Westport Country Playhouse Hosts Community Conversation, 3/26

Westport Country Playhouse will host 'Female Power Unleashed:  Politics and Positive Change,' a Community Conversation with Alisyn Camerota, anchor of CNN's 'New Day,' and Patricia Russo, executive director of the Women's Campaign School at Yale, on Monday, March 26, at 6:30 p.m. The hour-long conversation, including a 10-minute Q&A, will acknowledge Women's History Month.  Michael Barker, Westport Country Playhouse managing director, will moderate.  Admission is free by reservation.

Westport Country Playhouse Releases Statement On Death Of Howard J. Aibel

Westport Country Playhouse's leadership issued the following statements today on the March 9th death of Howard J. Aibel, who served actively on the Playhouse Board of Trustees since 2005, most recently as Vice Chair. In February 2018, the historic theater named its entire campus "The Howard J. Aibel Theater Center at Westport Country Playhouse" in recognition of his $3 million gift. Aibel, age 88 of Weston, Connecticut, was a lawyer, conservationist, philanthropist, and arts advocate.
