On June 4, students and educators from across Connecticut and Rhode Island will gather at the Shubert Theatre of New Haven for the first annual Stephen Sondheim Awards, which will be hosted by Hamilton's Solea Pfeiffer and Ryan Vasquez. The Sondheim Awards are presented by Broadway Method Academy (BMA), in association with the Shubert Theatre and Westport Country Playhouse.

The Connecticut professional theater's lineup includes two comedies, one modern and one classic; a drama; a musical; and a world premiere, running from May 29 through November 17.

Westport Country Playhouse's Sunday Symposium on June 3, following a 3 p.m. performance of Pearl Cleage's play "Flyin' West," will feature guest speaker Michele Mitchell, associate professor of history at New York University. The Playhouse Sunday Symposium program is free and open to the public. Mitchell will engage in a conversation about the play with David Kennedy, Playhouse associate artistic director.

Broadway Method Academy (BMA), in association with the Shubert Theatre of New Haven and Westport Country Playhouse, is proud to announce the nominees for the Stephen Sondheim Awards. The black-tie gala will take place on June 4 at 7:30 pm at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, CT. The program's mission is to recognize excellence in high school musical theater.

Westport Country Playhouse has been awarded a $15,000 Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for the autumn production of Matthew Greene's "Thousand Pines," a world premiere from the Playhouse's New Works Circle Initiative. Directed by Austin Pendleton, the drama will run from Oct. 30 through Nov. 17.

Westport Country Playhouse will present the musical, "Harry the Dirty Dog," as part of its Family Festivities Series for two performances on Sunday, May 6, at 1 p.m., and 4 p.m. Based on the bestselling book written by Gene Zion and illustrated by Margaret Bloy Graham, the one-hour production is produced by ArtsPower and appropriate for grades K through 2. Westport Country Playhouse has received a $150,000 gift from the Eunice and David Bigelow Foundation for a new lighting communication system. Due to the speed of advancements in computer technology, the lighting system installed during the Playhouse's 2005 renovation is now almost obsolete.

In addition, a "Sneak Peek" of the upcoming season will be hosted by Mark Lamos, Playhouse artistic director, at 6:30 p.m. The "Sneak Peek" will feature guests representing all of the upcoming productions, including playwrights, directors, and designers. Admission is free and open to the public.

Westport Country Playhouse will host 'Female Power Unleashed: Politics and Positive Change,' a Community Conversation with Alisyn Camerota, anchor of CNN's 'New Day,' and Patricia Russo, executive director of the Women's Campaign School at Yale, on Monday, March 26, at 6:30 p.m. The hour-long conversation, including a 10-minute Q&A, will acknowledge Women's History Month. Michael Barker, Westport Country Playhouse managing director, will moderate. Admission is free by reservation.

Westport Country Playhouse's leadership issued the following statements today on the March 9th death of Howard J. Aibel, who served actively on the Playhouse Board of Trustees since 2005, most recently as Vice Chair. In February 2018, the historic theater named its entire campus "The Howard J. Aibel Theater Center at Westport Country Playhouse" in recognition of his $3 million gift. Aibel, age 88 of Weston, Connecticut, was a lawyer, conservationist, philanthropist, and arts advocate.
