Pacific Opera Project (POP) opens its 2019 season with Mozart's The Magic Flute as never seen it before - set in classic video games from the early 1980s - in a return to the El Portal Theatre. Performances take place on March 2, 3, 8, 9, and 10, 2019, including two Sunday matinees. The 'super' production transports Papageno, Tamino, and the gang to the land of video games resembling Mario Bros. and Zelda with a new English libretto by Artistic Director Josh Shaw and E. Amilcare Ponchielli's opera La Gioconda (no link whatsoever with the painting in the Louvre) is one of those works too rarely represented despite its obvious qualities. Once the most successful opera between Verdi's Aida (1871) and Otello (1887), it is now considered a work stylistically so heterogeneous and both vocally and scenically so demanding that few opera houses try their hand at it. La Monnaie takes on the challenge and invites conductor Paolo Carignani and stage director Olivier Py to revive the whole grand opera behind 'The Dance of the Hours'.

92Y's Harkness Dance Festival celebrates its 25th season celebrating Merce Cunningham's centennial. For five weekends from March 1-30, HDF presents performances of Merce's own choreography for Cross Currents, Doubles, Landrover, Loose Time, Scenario and Septet, danced by New York Theatre Ballet, Melissa Toogood, Calvin Royal III and New World School of the Arts. The Festival continues with four weekends of world premieres representing four generations of Cunningham dancers who established companies of their own - Douglas Dunn, Dylan Crossman, Jonah Bokaer and Ellen Cornfield.

The 5th Avenue Theatre has announced that Mickey Thomas, the lead singer of Starship (formerly Jefferson Starship), will star as Dennis in its sensational new production of Rock of Ages. Rock of Ages is the '80s rock ballad blast that features the music of Styx, Joan Jett, Twisted Sister, and more. With Mickey Thomas as lead vocalist, Starship produced hits including "We Built This City" (which appears in the production), "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now," and "Sara."

To Kill a Mockingbird opens on the Lohrey Stage at Theatre Memphis, January 18, and runs through February 3, 2019. This dramatization by Christopher Sergel (from the book by Harper Lee) is set in 1935 and explores the curiosity and inconvenient presence of a young girl, Scout, as she brings some sanity to a hard fought situation in the community. She and her brother are being raised by their housekeeper and their father, Atticus Finch, who is a lawyer defending a young black man wrongfully accused in a quiet Southern town. Two student matinees (already sold out) will be Thursday, January 24 and Friday, February 2, both shows at 10 am.
