In playwright Caridad Svich's lyrical deconstruction of Hamlet, Ophelia cuts a new path for herself through a neo-Elizabethan Appalachia. In this world, Hamlet is known as Rude Boy, Gertrude is a brothel madam, and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are her androgynous helpers.
Last night, at Los Angeles's annual Ovation Awards ceremony, the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation announced the establishment of The Gordon Davidson Award, a new honor to be bestowed annually by SDCF to recognize a director or choreographer for lifetime achievement and distinguished service in the regional theatre nationally. SDCF President Sheldon Epps and SDC President Pam MacKinnon jointly announced the new recognition. The first Davidson Award will be announced in the latter half of June 2018, at an event still in development.
Main Street Theater (MST) continues its partnership with Prague Shakespeare Company (PSC) in presenting PSC's An Iliad by Lisa Peterson and Denis O'Hare, based on Homer's Iliad, translated by Robert Fagles, and directed by Main Street Theater Artistic Director Rebecca Greene Udden and Prague Shakespeare Company Artistic Director Guy Roberts. MST and PSC have been partners and collaborators since 2012. There will be a post-show discussion with Udden and Roberts on Sunday, January 7.
