On October 31 and November 1 and 2, the toe-tapping, captivating trumpeter and singer Byron Stripling joins the Houston Symphony for a memorable showcase of ragtime masters, blues legends and jazz classics. A spectacular trumpeter with a very wide range, a beautiful tone, and the ability to blend together many influences into his own style, Byron is an extroverted performer who brings the audience into his music. The happiness that he exudes through his trumpet, his vocals and his words is reminiscent of Louis Armstrong, yet very much his own.

Violinist, composer and educator Elektra Kurtis has an expansive multi-cultural background. Of Greek origin, she was raised in Poland and graduated from the Warsaw Conservatory at Miodowa, prior to completing her studies in Finland at the Sibelius Academy of Music in Helsinki. As a NYC resident for over twenty years, Elektra and her own group, Ensemble Elektra (featuring violinist Curtis Stewart; clarinetist Lefteris Bournias; drummer Reggie Nicholson; and bassist Kenny Davis), is dedicated to bridging cultural borders and genres of music, using the essence of Mediterranean music, spiced with Polish, Greek and Arabic flavor, based in contemporary jazz and classical music forms.

Master tenor saxophonist and internationally recognized jazz artist Andres Boiarsky is pleased to announce a special concert to celebrate the release of his new solo album Crosstalk at Shanghai Jazz on Saturday, April 26th. Joining Andres will be Roy Assaf on piano, Curtis Ostle on acoustic bass and Tony Campbell on drums. Released on One Trick Dog Records, the album showcases an accomplished musician at the height of his craft. Crosstalk travels a wide emotional and musical spectrum ranging from straight-ahead jazz with a 70's flair, to world music born out of the unique synthesis of Boiarsky's years spent living in China and Latin America. From compelling originals such as the seductively immersive "Cool You!" or the vibrantly rhythmic "Instant Combustion," to distinctive interpretations of classics such as Chick Corea's "High Wire - The Aerialist,"Andres's refined style ties together an eclectic variety of genres and themes into a cohesive whole.
