The National Comedy Center was formally designated as the nation's official cultural institution dedicated to the art form of comedy on Tuesday, March 12. Joey Folsom, Artistic Director of The Classics Theatre Project, today announced the formation of a permanent Resident Artists Company for the theatre to be underwritten by Liese and Mike Canterbury. The company members will be, in addition to Mr. Folsom, R. Andrew Aguilar, Sasha Maya Ada, Chad Cline, Stan Graner, Gretchen Hahn, N. Ryan McBride, Leslie Patrick, Van Quattro, Rachel Reininger and Dean Wray. The Resident Artists will fill many of the roles in the TCTP 3-play 2019 season: "Fool for Love," Summer and Smoke," and "The Crucible." In addition, the RAC members will work as members of the TCPT team in other areas of production, marketing, and development. The Company will be called the Canterbury Company of Resident Artists.

After an incredibly successful workshop run at Theatre Three's Theater Too in Dallas, playwright Jessica Cavanagh's SELF-INJURIOUS BEHAVIOR is headed for a New York showcase run at Urban Stages. Produced by the Dallas-based team of Cavanagh, actor/director Marianne Galloway, and producer Bren Rapp, the play will run in April during Autism Awareness Month and will feature the original workshop cast under Galloway's direction. Along with the cast of seven, which includes Dallas acting powerhouses Ian Ferguson, Danielle Pickard, Jennifer Kuenzer and Cavanagh, starring as a fictionalized version of herself, the orignal Dallas production and design team including set designer Jeff Schimdt (Artistic Director of Theatre Three) will be involved in transitioning the show from its local workshop phase to its New York showcase. Acting as associate producer, former DFW actor/artist now based in New York, Montgomery Sutton, will help to bring the play to the New York market. PlayGround has announced the lineup for its second annual PlayGround Solo Performance Festival, a celebration of the best in Bay Area solo performance, running January 24-February 10 at Potrero Stage. The festival features 12 double-bill performances by 11 local artists over three weeks, including new works by Ron Campbell, Julie Gieseke, Malcolm Grissom, Emil Guillermo, Michael Phillis, Fred Pitts, Kathryn Seabron, and Talisha Tolliver, as well as special guests Marga Gomez, Matthew Martin, and Nina Wise, with each evening running a little over two hours. PlayGround opens the program to the next generation of performers with a special Open Mic Night on Monday, January 28, at 8pm. The festival, initiated last winter as one of PlayGround's new "pop-up" programs, represents an extension of PlayGround's mission and commitment to the discovery of bold new voices for the stage and the first PlayGround offering fully dedicated to solo performance.
