When a classic play from the past is revived, there's always the temptation to point out its relevance to today, or at least to present it through a contemporary lens. In some ways, that's what playwright Lucas Hnath is doing with his entirely new play, A DOLL'S HOUSE, PART 2, where characters from Ibsen's 1879 drama rehash the events that led to the play's famous ending and introduce subsequent events of Hnath's own invention.
Good morning, BroadwayWorld! Today's big news: The Drama Desk Award nominations are being announced from Feinstein's/54 Below, and A DOLL'S HOUSE, PART 2 bows on Broadway!
A Doll's House, Part 2 opens tonight, April 27, at the John Golden Theatre.
Produced by Scott Rudin and directed by Tony Award®-winner Sam Gold, this wildly inventive new American play picks up after Henrik Ibsen's most cherished work concludes.
In the final scene of Ibsen's 1879 ground-breaking masterwork, Nora Helmer makes the shocking decision to leave her husband and children, and begin a life on her own. This climactic event - when Nora slams the door on everything in her life - instantly propelled world drama into the modern age. In A Doll's House, Part 2, many years have passed since Nora's exit. Now, there's a knock on that same door. Nora has returned. But why? And what will it mean for those she left behind?
Get to know the cast before tonight's opening bows!
