The International Opera Awards today announces the finalists for its 2019 Awards.

It's a Christmas miracle and a brand new episode this week as we sit down with Costume Designer Alejo Vietti AND a very special guest, Tony Award winner Jessie Mueller! Jessie is probably most known for having originated the role of Carole King in the Broadway production of "Beautiful", and all her fabulous clothes came from the mind of this week's guest.

Baruch Performing Arts Center is pleased to present the world premiere of Words on the Street, a hybrid music-theater event that wrestles with power, complacency, and excess. Originally written by Anna Rabinowitz as a series of poems, Words on the Street has been transformed into a unique production, collaboratively conceived and developed by Rabinowitz, director Kristin Marting, the late composer Matt Marks (1980-2018), and video designer Lianne Arnold. In response to the untimely death of Matt Marks, a community of composers, Lainie Fefferman, John Glover, Mary Kouyoumdjian, David T. Little, Kamala Sankaram, Caroline Shaw, and Randall Woolf have contributed additional compositions to create a highly original sonic world for the work. Music direction is by Mila Henry.

The season includes the 27th year of the Milt Hinton Jazz Perspectives series, a 5th Anniversary celebration of the CUNY Dance Initiative, and work in progress by veteran writer-performer Penny Arcade. On June 4, the OBIE-winner HERE will honor Tony Award-winner Eve Ensler and HERE's board chair and star attorney Bethany Haynes at Out of the Box for 25 Years, HERE's 25th Anniversary Gala. The evening celebrates HERE's quarter of a century history as a leader in thinking creatively, reimagining performance practice and taking audiences to new frontiers. HERE has been a champion for unconventional theater artists, puppeteers, musicians, and dancers for 25 years including Ensler, whose groundbreaking The Vagina Monologues was developed and premiered at HERE in 1996.

NYSPresents, in conjunction with the University of California, Irvine, will commence performances of THE SEWPS and THE SCARLET SAVIOR on Friday, April 20, and Saturday, April 21, at The Playroom Theatre.

Composer and performer Joan La Barbara has been mining the life and work of Joseph Cornell for many years. In this free with Museum admission performance she presents selections from her epic song cycle 'The Wanderlusting of Joseph C.' along with 'Windows' and 'Habite par ses reves et les phantasms.'

The Metropolitan Opera star Lauren Flanigan will lead the cast of Alan Roland's culturally and politically relevant play Flight of the Ibis which will receive a special one-night-only performance Sunday, April 29 at 3PM in the Theatre of The Riverside Church (91 Claremont Ave. at West 120th St.).

Florida Grand Opera (FGO) is accepting applications for its second annual Youth Artist Learning Academy (YALA) Summer Vocal Institute. Specifically designed for students in grades 7-12, YALA gears its program toward young aspiring opera singers, those who want to learn about backstage craft, as well as people who simply seek to develop an appreciation of the art form. YALA's staff of seasoned industry professionals will provide an indelible, hands-on experience in the world of opera.

More than 400 opera aficionados and performers - including opera stars Harolyn Blackwell, Lauren Flanigan, Ailyn Perez, Diana Soviero, Teresa Stratas and surprise presenter Renee Fleming, were among those who attended the 12th Annual OPERA NEWS Awards at The Plaza Hotel last night.
