The Group Repertory Theatre, under the direction of Larry Eisenberg, will bring to its stage on June 3 probably the greatest and most revered of the classic melodramas, 'The Poor of New York' by Dion Boucicault. The play closes July 10 at the Lonny Chapman Theatre in the NoHo Arts District of North Hollywood.
Sometimes plays from the distant past are better left where they belong, or if revisited and given a fresh look, it is wise to make sure the pieces fit securely. Larry Eisenberg, a diligent and resourceful actor and director, ordinarily, has unwisely chosen to take Dion Boucicault's The Poor of New York, a melodrama in five acts, which was last seen on Broadway in 1857, and put a more realistic spin on it. It sounded interesting on paper, and especially with the promo that it would not be done for laughs but with a straightforward approach for pure dramatic effect. Despite some splendid staging and energetic cast contributions, the production, now onstage @ Group rep at Lonny Chapman is like a malfunctioning railroad car trying to catch up to the rest of the train.

In his lovely script The Trip to Bountiful Horton Foote engages our attention with his keen appraisal that 'The world can't be bought'. Believing the best things in life are free - well, almost..., elderly Carrie Watts (Gwen Van Dam) proves just how healing a return to one's roots, however brief, may be. Group rep utilizes a fine cast, achieving an overall excellent representation of Foote's rarely seen work.
Last mounted by Group rep in 2008, Daniel Sullivan's intelligent and very funny Inspecting Carol is a farcical look at a production of Dickens' A Christmas Carol by a regional theatre, in this case the fictional Soap Box Playhouse. Group rep's current superb cast make their second production of it a worthy view.
The Group Rep presents Lee Blessing's highly acclaimed dramedy A WALK IN THE WOODS directed by Richard Alan Woody, featuring Larry Eisenberg (A SHAYNA MADEL/ICT) and Fox Carney (ARSENIC AND OLD LACE/GRT) , July 31 through September 4, Fridays at 8pm and Saturday Matinees at 4:00 pm, at the Lonny Chapman Theatre located in the NoHo Arts District of North Hollywood.
At first glance, this Walk is a heavily dramatic discussion between a savvy Russian diplomat Andrey (Larry Eisenberg) and a novice, yet sharp American negotiator John (Fox Carney), who meet in Switzerland to develop a treaty for nuclear disarmament. Seemingly heavy drama! However, as the piece progresses, during the course of their walk in the woods - to break the monotony of the indoor table talks - the beauty of the outdoors, the clean air, and the less stressful ambiance lead toward an unexpected alliance between the two men. A sort of friendship develops, as it were, that, as in life, plays out in gamelike fashion with a conflicting mix of ups and downs. No room for boredom here, as a fair amount of levity ensues.
