Rivalisierende Jugendbanden ziehen durch die Straßen von New York. Eine aggressive Spannung herrscht zwischen den US-amerikanischen »Jets« und den aus Puerto Rico eingewanderten »Sharks«. Das Zusammenprallen der Kulturen und der Traum von einer toleranten Welt ist von Bernstein mitreißend, rebellisch und feinfuhlig in Musik umgesetzt worden. In WEST SIDE STORY vereint er Elemente aus Oper, Jazz, Musical mit feurigen Tanzrhythmen und schuf unsterbliche Hits wie »Maria«, »Somewhere« und »Tonight«. Das ursprunglich in den 50iger Jahren angesiedelte Stuck wird derzeit am Theater Lubeck aufgeführt, wobei die Geschichte dabei in die Gegenwart versetzt wurde, was vor allem durch Kostum- und Buhnenbild zum Ausdruck kommt.

Renowned Stratford Festival artist Scott Wentworth will perform 'double duty,' directing the production and playing the staunch bachelor Benedick, opposite his real-life wife Marion Adler as the feisty Beatrice. This production will celebrate the winter holiday season, filled with music and dance that evokes the end of World War II, White Christmas era. Performances begin tonight, December 3rd at the F.M. Performances begin September 10 at the F.M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre, 36 Madison Avenue in Madison. Tickets start at $25 for preview performances and $32 for regular performances.
