On opening night, October 15, Kyle Abraham, Artistic Director, presented six works, including, for one night only, Ash, a solo for American Ballet Theatre principal ballerina, Misty Copeland. Ash was saved for last on the program. The anticipation was palpable, but the entire performance was riveting. Abraham has earned numerous awards and honors for his choreography, and his work has been presented throughout the United States and abroad.

From Kyle Abraham rendering Misty Copeland into a sterile robot to Crystal Pite's droning narration, this was an evening sorely in need of inventive rhythm and grooves. Thank goodness then for the visiting South Africans of Vuyani Dance Theatre.
The Broad Stage announces an expanded number of American Sign Language (ASL) interpreted performances for the 2019-2020 season in an effort to create an inclusive environment for all audience members and ensure that as many people as possible are able to experience the magic of live performance. DANCE NOW announces the lineup for the 2019 Festival ENCORE! The one-night-only performance will feature the 10 choreographers/companies selected by the DANCE NOW producers for having most successfully met the 2019 DANCE NOW Challenge: to create a clear and complete artistic statement in five minutes or less for the specifics of the stage at Joe's Pub. This year's Challenge winner is Nicole Vaughan-Diaz. As the Challenge winner, Vaughan-Diaz will receive a $1,500 stipend and a weeklong creative residency at DANCE NOW Silo on Kirkland Farm in Bucks County, PA. The ENCORE! program will be hosted by Deborah Lohse (aka TruDee).
The Carpenter Performing Arts Center, located on the campus of California State University, Long Beach, has announced the 2019-2020 Arts for Life season. Arts for Life is the Carpenter Center's education initiative, providing concerts, classes, lectures, readings, workshops and more to the CSULB campus, Long Beach schools, and to the wider community.
