Following an unprecedented thirty show run, SONDHEIM UNPLUGGED, the acclaimed and award-winning cabaret series, continued on Sunday, Sept 15 at 54 Below. Sondheim Unplugged is currently celebrating the third year of it's smash run, having begun this journey of celebrating Sondheim in July of 2010.
Following an unprecedented thirty show run, SONDHEIM UNPLUGGED, the acclaimed and award-winning cabaret series, continues tonight, Sept 15 at 7pm at 54 Below. Sondheim Unplugged is currently celebrating the third year of it's smash run, having begun this journey of celebrating Sondheim in July of 2010.
This month, UNPLUGGED will welcome just announced guests George Lee Andrews and Harvey Evans, as well as special guests Dee Hoty, Pamela Myers, Sarah Rice & Alice Ripley. The cast also includes cabaret and Broadway veterans Trent Armand Kendall (Broadway's Smokey Joe's Cafe, Into the Woods),Award-winning vocal group Marquee 5, T. Oliver Reid (Broadway's Sister Act, The Color Purple), Julie Reyburn(MAC/Bistro/Nightlife Award winner) and Lucia Spina (Broadway's Kinky Boots, South Pacific). Sondheim Unpluggedis hosted by 54 Below's Director of Original Programming, Phil Geoffrey Bond, with Musical Direction by Joe Goodman. In 2011, Sondheim Unplugged received the 2011 Bistro Award for Outstanding Cabaret Series, and was nominated for the 2011 MAC Award.

Performers included Eric Comstock, Baby Jane Dexter, Natalie Douglas, Antonio Edwards, Eric Engelhardt, Barbara Fasano, Terese Genecco, Jeff Harnar, Mark Hartman, Tanya Holt, Sue Matsuki , Marissa Mulder, Christine Pedi, Colm Reilly, Julie Reyburn, Ricky Ritzel, KT Sullivan, Stacy Sullivan, Grace Wall, Lennie Watts & Carol Woods. More talent is on display this coming Wednesday, Aug 7th, for Broadway Ballyhoo at the Laurie Beechman Theatre. This ever-changing musical revue will feature, this week, some of the greatest performers of our contemporary nightclub world. Scott will welcome to the Ballyhoo, the new leader of the Mabel Mercer Foundation and one of cabaret's most award-winning stars, KT SULLIVAN, plus the irrepressible MARK NADLER who has been called, 'arguably the greatest entertainer in the world,' and the multiple-award winning vocalist JULIE REYBURN. All three of the above are Nightlife Award-winning performers. They will be joined by the musical theater and TV Star who famously understudied Hugh Jackman inThe Boy From Oz, KEVIN SPIRTAS, as well as Broadway Rising star NIKKI GUEVARA.

After a critically acclaimed one-year run at Feinstein's at Loew's Regency, ending only because the Regency closed for renovations, Scott Siegel's BROADWAY BALLYHOO re-launches at The Laurie Beechman Theatre, downstairs at the West Bank Cafe on Wednesday, July 24th at 10:30 PM (doors open at 10 PM).
Unless the host is particularly warm, funny, and charismatic (think Dana Lorge and her new monthly vehicle at the Metropolitan Room) or the show is a way to champion a good cause (like Joseph Macchia's Cabaret Cares events), for the most part cabaret variety shows are clunky affairs which can be too long, too rambling, give too much time to average talent or not enough of a showcase to outstanding talent. I ran into one of the rare exceptions last month (April 23) in the form of the The Concerts for City Greens' First Annual Gala & 2012 Songwriting Contest Finale, a variety show at the Laurie Beechman Theatre that served as a fund raiser for the launch of a new non-profit called Music and Art for Green which will incorporate Concerts for City Greens within its umbrella.
