Billy Stritch, continuing his 'My Winter Valentine' at The Birdland Theater had his long time friend Sally Mayes as his special guest last night. It's too bad only about 100 or so lovers could be in the room to hear their version of the signature Valentines Day song My Funny Valentine.
The silent auction item at The New York Pops annual gala/concert held at Carnegie Hall and the Mandarin Hotel in April, offered a pianist to play at your private party complete with catering by Trattoria del Arte. The Pops Concert and Gala's proceeds help finance The Pops/Ed Programs. For the third year, the winning bidder got much more than she bargained for. Not only did the advertised pianist (Stephen Sorokoff) appear, but also a slew of New York's must celebrated keyboard artists and entertainers joined the festivities.

Marilyn Maye proudly celebrated her 90th birthday on April 10th by starting the run of her latest show at Feinstein's/54Below. It would be an understatement to say she blew the roof off the sold out room on opening night. (people said it was the loudest cheering they'd ever heard in the club).
The Friars archives and Wikipedia have finally been corrected. Nineteen Eighty Eight was a watershed year for women. They gained membership to numerous private men's clubs that heretofore were off limits to women. The Friars, being one of the more famous of the bunch had an article heralding the event written by a less than factual reporter for The New York Times. The paper of record, in an early forerunner of fake news only listed the first 7 women and overlooked number 8...Jamie deRoy who was in that initial group, along with Liza Minnelli, Joan Rivers, Brooke Shields, and other prominent female entertainment figures was not mentioned.

Melissa, one of the true giants of the music world made her Birdland debut and celebrated the release of her 21st album, The Fellas. The album pays tribute to the male singers, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis, Mel Torme, and others who influenced her as a young artist.
When she was a teenager Julie Budd was introduced to audiences by the likes of Ed Sullivan, Merv Griffin, Johnny Carson, Carol Burnett, Danny Thomas, and Liberace, to name just a few. Julianne Boyd, artistic director of Barrington Stage Company did the honors on the first night of Julie Budd's engagement at Mr. Finn's Cabaret. The casual summer audience realized this would be a different night as Julie's band under the direction of renowned arranger/producer/pianist Herb Bernstein enter Mr. Finn's attired in tuxedos and Julie looking every bit the glamorous singer she is was wearing a gown. Julie Budd has enjoyed a legendary career.
