From tonight, July 17 through August 3, 2013, MASS MoCA (the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams, MA) explodes with the sounds of the 12th Annual Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival at MASS MoCA, a utopian residency program dedicated entirely to the creation, study, and performance of the most adventurous music of our time. A three-week intensive of public performances, recitals, and lectures, the Festival will be attended by over 50 cutting-edge composers and performers from around the globe, including 37 fellows selected from a pool of over 250 applicants from 17 countries.
The Cooperstown Summer Music Festival, under the artistic direction of flutist Linda Chesis, celebrates its fifteenth anniversary season with a diverse offering of musical experiences. Tonight, Thursday, June 13 (7 + 9 pm) at The Invisible Dog in Brooklyn, choreographer Rebecca Lazier and indie-classical ensemble Newspeak present the first US performances of Coming Together/Attica, a site-specific setting of Frederic Rzewski's iconic minimalist scores written following the 1971 prison riots in upstate New York. Lazier's dancers are Rashaun Mitchell and Silas Riener (formerly of Merce Cunningham Dance Company); Asli Bulbul, most recently from Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company; Jennifer Lafferty, who is featured in the work of Beth Gill and Yasuko Yokoshi; Pierre Guilbault; and Christopher Ralph.

The Metropolitan Opera announced that 'An Evening with Nico Muhly, Two Boys, and other works' will be available for live video streaming on both NPR Music (www.npr.org/music) and WQXR's Q2 Music online contemporary classical station (www.wqxr.org/q2music) this Tuesday, May 14, beginning at 10 p.m. The concert, which takes place at Le Poisson Rouge, is curated by Muhly, who will appear as host and performer. Metropolitan Opera singers Jennifer Zetlan and Paul Appleby will be joined by the composer on piano. Muhly will also perform selections for piano and viola with featured artist Nadia Sirota, his frequent collaborator. Special guests will include violin duo Angela and Jennifer Chun.

The evening, entitled DON'T EVEN, will be hosted by James Matheson, composer and Neighborhood Classics Artistic Director at P.S. 142. The program includes Sean Friar's Clunker Concerto (world premiere, revised version), Jeremy Podgursky's Mindjob (East Coast premiere), Judd Greenstein's Octet 1979, Andrew Norman's Try, and David Lang's increase.

New Amsterdam--a non-profit artist-services organization and record label dedicated to supporting the public's engagement with new music by composers and performers whose work grows from the fertile ground between genres--is honored to announce it has teamed up with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in a unique residency that will focus on the artistic exploration into many forms of music in a symphonic format. Over the next two years, the ISO will periodically showcase the sophisticated, adventurous sound of highly trained composers and instrumentalists of the New Amsterdam community. In addition, New Amsterdam will work with the Orchestra in developing educational activities and community outreach programs that will bring the open-minded ethos of New Am into direct engagement with the needs of the greater ISO community.

Jersey City Nutcracker tells the story of two children's urban holiday adventure leading them through fantasy, adversity and celebration and teaching them lessons about friendship and community along the way. Choreographed and directed by Nimbus Artistic Director Samuel Pott, this adaption of Tchaikovsky's holiday classic is performed by a stand-out cast of professional dancers from Nimbus Dance Works joined by youth and adults from the community as they portray familiar characters such as the Sugar Plum Fairy, the Rat King, the Arabian Princess and Drosselmeyer - all with a Jersey City twist! Amidst colorful sets, costumes, a brightly adorned tree, youth and adults alike are touched by this tale of Christmas spirit.
