Longtime fixtures of the Nashville live music scene, Indianola are ready to hit the road and bring their brand of American Gothic troubadour rock'n'roll to the national stage. Last month, the band, led by Owen Beverly (Nicole Atkins, Oh Land) announced their debut full-length, Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye, with a visual glimpse into their dark inspiration with the “Too Good to Be True” video. Today, Indianola kicks things up a notch with “Everyday I Got the Blues,” an upbeat, sad-swagger ode to old fashioned, whiskey-soaked rock'n'roll. The video continues in the vein of the previous release, using chopped visuals from 1973 campy horror b-movie Messiah of Evil. Such is the vibe of Indianola and the rest of Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye - an homage to the nostalgic, swooning camp of mid-century southern-bred radio hits with a fast-paced, deliberate, electric 2019 update.

Brooklyn-based four-piece Damn Tall Buildings unleashed new scorcher 'Green Grass and Wine,' via Bluegrass Today, which said of the band, '...like so many young groups, they bring influences from outside the Appalachian mountains to their sound, like rootsy rock and American musical theater, but express their original songs with banjo, fiddle, guitar, and bass.' The track is from their forthcoming LP, Don't Look Down set for release on June 7, 2019; the album, produced by Dan Cardinal (Darlingside, Lula Wiles, Josh Ritter) is a statement of reconnection. 'Green Grass and Wine' follows the release of the album's lead single 'Late July' which The Boot described as a 'driving, yet lighthearted, meditation on tough times and loss.' The 13 gems housed on Don't Look Down are are awash in soaring fiddle licks, fierce banjo rolls, and goosebump-inducing four-part harmony--and as Bluegrass Today points out, Damn Tall Buildings may have a bluegrass configuration, but this band is anything but traditional.

While attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, the four began busking on street corners, which has been a huge and lasting influence on their captivating performance style. After going their separate ways after school and attempting to make things work from their various locations, the group collectively resettled in Brooklyn where they're making waves with their unique brand of music they call 'guerilla roots.'

Trying to pinpoint exactly who Dan Krikorian is can be a bit of a challenge. An acclaimed songwriter, a championship-winning college basketball coach, a thought-provoking professor, and the curator and host of the burgeoning and increasingly popular podcast series, The Beautiful Work Podcast, are just the beginning.

Seasons change, we rise and we fall, and our goal is to learn to appreciate these fleeting moments. These thoughts spun through the mind of Portland songwriter Clara Baker as she was recording her new album, Things to Burn. Produced by avant-folk experimentalist Shane Leonard (Kalispell, Field Report), the album was recorded in Shane's mother's house in the tiny village of Merton, Wisconsin. Joined by two stellar roots musicians, Courtney Hartman (Della Mae) and Zachariah Hickman (Josh Ritter, Ray Lamontagne), Baker recorded the album live to tape, no isolation booths, no cutting in-and-out of vocal takes, no headphones, pushing herself and the players to experience the music in the moment. Fellow Portland songwriters Jeffrey Martin andAnna Tivel stopped in while on tour through Wisconsin and added harmonies and fiddle to a song; there was a relaxed feeling to the days, and an emphasis on collaboration amongst the players. Recording engineer Brian Joseph (Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens) trucked over his studio in a U-Haul, and they all set up in the living room, taking the chance that a live performance without the cushion of a recording studio would lead to the best possible performances. “There's an authenticity to a live performance that I wanted to recreate with this recording,” Baker says. “The experience of recording that way changes the way the music sounds. We set up this experience intentionally to have us be really focused on being in the moment. It was an emotional experience.”

Peace of Mind is like a soundtrack to this crazy time in America. Each of the eight songs has a different theme — like immigration, voter suppression, mental health, etc. And Bhi didn't want to just release them into the album-cycle ether. So, he and the team at Critical Frequency have packaged these songs, one per episode, into what plays like a half-hour radio show w/ conversations, storytelling and cool sound design (comprised entirely of the stems for that song). At the end, Bhi shares the full song and the story behind it.

Lowland Hum have shared the third single from their upcoming album Glyphonic out May 10. It's a thoughfully paced self-reflection complete with evocative lyric video. Atwood Magazine premiered the track, noting with care, ''Slow' is built around Lauren and Daniel Goans' harmonized vocals and an acoustic track similar to 'Space Oddity.' The instrumentation is bare and enhances the haunting quality of their vocals. An electric guitar adds texture when their voices go higher, or the acoustic waltzes as the two seem to narrate the dancers in their video. As words flash across the screen, images of dancers, rocketships, and outer-space are all laid over-each other that compliments the dream-like tone of the song.'

Tim Bluhm is set to release his new full-length solo album, Sorta Surviving, on March 29, 2019. A gentle departure from his usual California-Soul sound of the Mother Hips, Sorta Surviving finds Bluhm living out his classic country musical dreams. Produced by Widespread Panic's Dave Schools and anchored by all-star band members Jesse Aycock (guitar, vocals) and Jason Crosby (piano, violin, organ), and Nashville session legends Gene Chrisman (drums) and David Roe (bass), Bluhm's new album was recorded at Cash Cabin Studios in Hendersonville, TN. “Recording in that space with those guys was like a dream come true for me,” says Bluhm. “The depth of knowledge they walk around with in their heads is amazing, and you know you can trust the musical choices they're making.” Today, Jambase premiered the video for “Where I Parked My Mind”, an up to date representation of a night on the town and its repercussions. Director Tim Duggan tells Jambase, “People start their night expecting to have the time of their lives and often they try to portray that kind of ecstasy with phones and social media. The reality is almost always less glamorous.” See the video here.

And The Kids have shared a new song from their upcoming album When This Life Is Over out February 22 on Signature Sounds (Lake Street Dive, Josh Ritter, Dustbowl Revival). “No Way Sit Back” is a rollicking indie rock attack of the media and the toll it takes on minorities. While it's written from the queer perspective, the message isn't limited to one viewpoint. The joyful melody clashes against a stabbing line, 'The world was never made for, Made for us.' When This Life Is Over is the beloved Northampton group's third full-length and the most dynamic declaration of their distinctly rambunctious sound to date.

Anna Tivel has shared the title track from her upcoming record, coming out on Portland's Fluff & Gravy Records, at Billboard today. Speaking to the genesis of 'The Question' Tivel told Billboard 'it's about being in New York and looking up into a window and seeing a man putting on makeup and a wig. There's a lot of people I know and friends of friends who are transgender, transitioning or just struggling, and having the president sort of waffling backwards on any progress that's been made with that. I started writing this (song) as a poem that night and put it to chords later back at home.' Read more about The Question and hear the song HERE.
