Last night The York Theatre Company honored the musical theatre writing team of Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt in a Fantastick gala concert and award ceremony directed by Richard Jay-Alexander. The 2017 Oscar Hammerstein Award for Lifetime Achievement in Musical Theatre was presented to the legendary team (The Fantasticks, I Do, I Do!, 110 in the Shade, Celebration) at the event held at the Asia Society on Park Ave in NYC and BroadwayWorld was there. For the Fall 2017 semester, Theatre TCU produced a studio season made up of three successful productions. These included Tom Kellogg in B Flat, an original play written by Theatre TCU faculty Member T.J. Walsh, Sylvia by A.R. Gurney, and finally, the renowned classic Fiddler On the Roof (Book by Joseph Stein, Music by Jerry Bock, Lyrics by Sheldon Harnick) as the closing show of the semester. It is worth noting that Theatre TCU completely sold out all seven performances for Fiddler On the Roof within a matter of minutes, and when I attended the production it was clear why as soon as the opening number Tradition began. Theatre TCU has proven time and again that they are capable of producing professional, technically thorough productions bursting with youthful student talent.
Theatre is about pushing the boundaries of what's expected. In the Cultural Arts Playhouse's latest production of Fiddler on the Roof, director Eliana Kayelle has taken many risks in her telling of the Broadway classic.

It should come as absolutely no surprise that the current production onstage at Massey Performing Arts Center in Nashville, courtesy of the astonishing Belmont University Musical Theatre program, is possibly as good or even better than any show we've seen put on over the years by the venerated musical theater training school. In fact, BUMT has produced so many remarkable performers over the years that we may all rest assured that musical theater in America (if not the world) will continue to grow and prosper, thanks to the continued supply of new blood from Belmont.
