Grab your lamp and flying carpet for the Diamond Edition of Disney's Aladdin, which was just re-released on Blu-ray and Digital HD. The 1992 animated musical fantasy film was produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures, marking the 31st animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series, and was part of the Disney film era known as the Disney Renaissance. Some of the stars of the Broadway production and voices of the original movie characters joined forces earlier this week to celebrate the release and BroadwayWorld was on hand to chat with the whole gang!

In 1989, Disney revitalized both animation and musical theatre for generations to come with their Academy Award-winning film THE LITTLE MERMAID. They followed up that success with BEAUTY AND THE BEAST in 1991, which won another two Oscars, and then in 1992 they again broke the animated mold with ALADDIN, which took home two more trophies. Not only did these three films reinvigorate the nearly dead genre of animated musicals, but ALADDIN specifically inspired decades of films that were not only enjoyable to kids, but were also funny on another level that kept adults entertained as well.

Part of doing the show on Broadway was an homage to his dear friend and collaborator's wonderful work.

Today in 2009, The Little Mermaid closed at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, where it ran for 685 performances. The Little Mermaid is based on the animated 1989 Disney film of the same name and the classic story of The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen. The musical's book is by Doug Wright, music by Alan Menken and lyrics by the late Howard Ashman (written for the film) and new lyrics by Glenn Slater. The original cast featured Sierra Boggess in the title role of Ariel, Sean Palmer as Prince Eric, Brian D'Addario and Trevor Braun alternate as Flounder, Norm Lewis as King Triton, Sherie Rene Scott as Ursula, Tituss Burgess as Sebastian, Tyler Maynard as Flotsam, Derrick Baskin as Jetsam, Jonathan Freeman as Grimsby, and John Treacy Egan as Chef Louis.

Broadway's ALADDIN stars Adam Jacobs and Courtney Reed recently met with their German counterparts- the stars of the upcoming Hamburg premiere of ALADDIN DAS MUSICAL. Jacobs posted a picture of the two couples to Instagram, with the caption, 'Seeing double? It's Aladdin and Jasmine from the German cast of Aladdin opening in December!' Check it out below!

Earlier today, First Lady Michelle Obama welcomed ALADDIN stars Adam Jacobs (Aladdin), James Monroe Iglehart (Genie), Courtney Reed (Jasmine) and several members of the Aladdin ensemble to perform a selection of highlights from the Tony-winning hit musical at The White House Kids' State Dinner. The performance garnered a standing ovation, with the First Lady thanking the cast, calling the performance 'perfection.' She even joined in on a sing-along version of one of the show's most popular numbers, 'Friend Like Me.' Scroll down for photos from the performance!
