BWW Review: Creative Adaptation of Children's Book HOW TO CATCH A STAR Charms at the Kennedy Center

I had two main questions about the world premiere Kennedy Center commission of HOW TO CATCH A STAR: would it match the original children's book's ability to appeal to kids and adults alike, and would it be as visually charming as Oliver Jeffers's illustrations? I'm pleased to report that the answer to both is a resounding yes. Appropriate for ages three and up, HOW TO CATCH A STAR uses stunning projection design (Olivia Sebesky) and quirky choreography (Orange Grove Dance Company) to tell the story of how a boy's seemingly impossible dream of catching a star leads him to discover important lessons about life.

BWW Review: JOHN at Signature Theatre

One thing can be said about award-nominated playwright Annie Baker. She captures the human condition in the most realistic of ways. This is no more apparent than in Signature Theatre's production of Baker's latest work, John. Director Joe Calarco delivers his finest staging to date. He's assembled a superb cast that includes the grand dame of DC theater, Nancy Robinette.

Signature Theatre Announces Cast And Creative Team For Annie Baker's JOHN

Signature Theatre announces the full cast and creative team for the DC premiere of Annie Baker's John, directed by Signature Theatre Director of New Work Joe Calarco (Signature's The Gulf, Jesus Christ Superstar). Elias and Jenny, a young Brooklyn couple, escape on a much-needed getaway to a cozy bed-and-breakfast in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. However, under the watchful eye of the cheery, if slightly off, innkeeper, a ghost seems to haunt their crumbling relationship. Annie Baker's John was called "so good on so many levels that it casts a unique and brilliant light' by The New Yorker. John will run April 3 - April 29 in Signature Theatre's MAX Theatre.

Cast, Creative Team Set for The Hub Theatre's 'PEEKABOO!' World Premiere

The Hub Theatre presents a nativity play like you have never seen by DC-native Anne M. McCaw. In PEEKABOO! A Nativity Play Mary and Joseph learn they are to be parents - of the world's savior no less - they get caught up in something much, much bigger than a couple of na ve kids are ready for. Directed by Hub Artistic Director Helen R. Murray, with musical arrangements by Jonathan Feuer, PEEKABOO! is a heartfelt farce of biblical proportions.

BWW Review: CHARLOTTE'S WEB at Imagination Stage

E. B. White's Charlotte's Web has been adapted in many ways. There was an animated movie musical back in the 70s, a live action film a few years back, and a stage adaptation that Theatreworks USA toured around the country for years. Imagination Stage in Bethesda is currently presenting the latter as its holiday attraction. The creative team takes a very heavy-handed approach to material that isn't that light to begin with, unfortunately.

BWW Review: Thought-Provoking REDDER BLOOD Premieres at The Hub Theatre

The Hub Theatre's REDDER BLOOD, co-produced with the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia, is many things: a dysfunctional family drama, a romantic sitcom, and a philosophical exploration. But what it does most successfully is encourage thought-provoking discussion about the vast topics it covers.
