Anacostia Playhouse Stages THE GIN GAME, Now thru 1/22

The Anacostia Playhouse will kick off 2014 with a new production of D.L. Coburn's Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Gin Game. It's Visitor's Day at the Bentley retirement home and Fonsia Dorsey, a newcomer, seeks refuge on an isolated sun porch. It is there that she meets Weller Martin. Weller begrudgingly offers to teach Fonsia to play Gin. Over the next few weeks the two find companionship in one another as they play cards. 'I'm still alive!' Weller shouts to Fonsia -compelling the audience to examine the ways in which our society treats its elders.

Laura Osnes & Julian Ovenden to Join Michael Feinstein at Carnegie Hall for Valentine's Day Concert

Grammy Award-nominated singer and renowned interpreter of the Great American Songbook,Michael Feinstein, returns to Carnegie Hall with a special concert featuring a variety of love songs in celebration of Valentine's Day, on Friday, February 14 at 8:00 p.m. He is joined by special guests Laura Osnes (Broadway's Cinderella, and Maria in Carnegie Hall's The Sound of Music) andJulian Ovenden (Season Four of PBS's Downton Abbey, the West End's Finding Neverland, and as John F. Kennedy in the 'Bombshell' production on NBC's Smash).

Washington National Opera Announces New Opera, PENNY, January 2015

Washington National Opera (WNO) today announced the commission of a new hour-long opera for the 2014-2015 season of the American Opera Initiative, its comprehensive new commissioning program for contemporary American opera. Penny, by composer Douglas Pew and librettist Dara Weinberg, will have its world premiere in January 2015 in the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater. Pew and Weinberg are alumni of the American Opera Initiative; their 20-minute work A Game of Hearts had its world premiere during the program's first season in November 2012.

American Airlines Takes Off With New Airbus A321 Transcontinental Aircraft

Today American Airlines welcomes the new Airbus A321T, the first of what will become a dedicated three-class fleet operating on transcontinental flights between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), and JFK and San Francisco International Airport (SFO). American will initially operate the A321T between New York and Los Angeles, and will introduce the new plane between New York and San Francisco in March. American is the only U.S. carrier to offer three classes of service between these key markets.

FOCUS DANCE is a part of FOCUS 2014, the National Platform to promote American dance both abroad and nationally. The week-long platform presents performances of U.S. based dance companies during the annual Arts Presenters Conference in New York City, and one of the largest gatherings of artists, dancers and dance professionals in the U.S. In January 2014, two venues partner with Gotham Arts Exchange to present the artistic visions of the curators gathered to shape the 2014 edition of FOCUS.

PETER AND THE STARCATCHER Flies Into the Kennedy Center, 1/28-2/1

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts presents the national tour of Peter and the Starcatcher, the five-time Tony Award winning musical play written by Tony Award nominee Rick Elice and directed by Tony Award?winner Roger Rees and Tony Award nominee Alex Timbers, from January 28 to February 16, 2014 in the Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theater. Press opening night is Thursday, January 30, 2014 at 7:30 p.m.

Martina Arroyo Receives 2013 Kennedy Center Honors on CBS-TV, 12/29

In recognition of her outstanding lifetime contribution to American culture, Martina Arroyo was saluted as one of five recipients of this year's Kennedy Center Honors in a star-studded gala celebration held on December 8 that will be broadcast nationwide as a two-hour prime time special on CBS-TV this Sunday, December 29 at 9pm, ET/PT. Seated with President and Mrs. Obama at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, as well as with her fellow honorees (actress Shirley MacLaine and musicians Herbie Hancock, Billy Joel and Carlos Santana), the pre-eminent American soprano was introduced in a speech by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who also narrated a short video about Arroyo. She was then saluted by a musical tribute celebrating her legendary portrayal of the title role in Verdi's Aida. First, Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja performed Radames's aria 'Celeste Aida,' and soprano Sondra Radvanovsky sang Aida's aria 'O patria mia.' Then the two star singers were joined by graduates of the Martina Arroyo Foundation's programs-Ryan Speedo Green, Chantelle Grant, Robert Kerr, and Yuriy Yurchuk-as well as the Army Herald Trumpets and the U.S. Naval Academy Glee Club, to perform the opera's Act II finale.
