While much of the attention on research at UCI is directed at the sciences – especially those relating to the health of people and the planet – for decades, the Claire Trevor School of the Arts has also generated research, although to much less notice. Jesse Colin Jackson is on a mission to change that.

American Composers Orchestra continues its 2021-2022 season, under the leadership of Artistic Director Derek Bermel and President Melissa Ngan, with The Gathering: A Collective Sonic Ring Shout co-presented by ACO and the Apollo Theater and co-curated with National Black Theatre in partnership with Gateways Music Festival and Harlem Chamber Players, on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at 8pm at the Apollo.

OPERA America has announced the third cycle of IDEA Opera Grants (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access), an initiative that supports teams of composers and librettists who identify as African, Latinx, Asian, Arab, and/or Native American in the development of new operatic works and the advancement of their careers in the opera industry.

Lynn Needle, former Nikolais Dance Theatre soloist, will appear on the United Solo Festival in her 'Six Solos - Legend, Myth and Nature,' a one hour, six solo, presentation that features works by seminal choreographers Alwin Nikolais (1953) and Claudia Gitelman (1978), along with dances by Ms. Needle that exemplify the German school of modern dance and its evolution.

Composer Joel Thompson's work exposes the painful realities of life in the United States for men and women of color. His powerful multi-movement choral work a?oeSeven Last Words of the Unarmeda?? is a timely, visceral and moving piece that speaks to racial inequities and violence against people of color. The work features the words of Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant, Eric Garner, Kenneth Chamberlain, Amadou Diallo, and John Crawford. These seven African-American men were each killed by police or other authority figures.

Socially conscious singersongwriter Ola Onabulé has built an enviable career as an international touring performer and has now turned his attention to the North American market with a newly recorded collection of original songs. Onabulé's meticulous attention to detail in his arrangements and production as well as the support from SennheiserNeumann have contributed to the manifestation of an impressive recording.

Now over 20 million albums into their career, there can be no doubt as to why The B-52s remain one of rock music's most beloved and enduring bands. As The B-52s continue to celebrate their 40th Anniversary, the band announced a world-wide tour today that is expected to cover more than 10 countries and will include a headlining North American summer tour, including a stop at the Majestic Theatre (224 E. Houston St.) in San Antonio, TX on August 21, 2019 at 7PM. Special guests OMD and Berlin will open the show. Tickets go on sale this Friday, April 12 at NOON.

The Brown Arts Initiative (BAI) at Brown University will present YOMO/Intermedia, an experimental dance, music, media and visual art performance, at the Granoff Center for the Creative Arts at Brown University on April 1 and 2, 2019.

Before the opening night performance a representative of Actors' Equity presented the theatre with a proclamation in honor of their 50thanniversary which included praise for not only Porthouse and Kent State University, but for Terri Kent, who has been leading the endeavor for 18 successful years. The words praised the venue for not only setting high professional theatrical goals, but for being a place where support, encouragement and respect is stressed.

The San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus (SFGMC)-under the leadership of Dr. Timothy Seelig, Artistic Director andChristopher Verdugo, Executive Director-continues Season 40: Unstoppable withBridges, a one-night-only homecoming concert centered around music's ability to move hearts and minds and catalyze momentous change. Presented by the John C. Kish Foundation, Bridges will take place at Davies Symphony Hall (201 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco) on Thursday, March 29 at 8 p.m.

TV One is celebrating Black History Month with a full slate of programming offerings that embody the theme, 'Represent the Dream.' The network also debuts a new short form video campaign featuring three-time Grammy Award and Academy Award winning artist, actor and social justice activist Common, which runs throughout the month of February. In the videos, Common discusses a variety of topics related to Black history and issues affecting the African American community: racism and how we can become a better nation; activism, the power of using 'our voice' and movements like Black Lives Matter; self-awareness, his heroes and what representing the dream means today, 55 years after Martin Luther King Jr.'s iconic 'I Have a Dream' speech.

TWO SIDES is a landmark limited four-part docu-series exploring watershed moments for law enforcement and the Black community at the crossroads between life and death, premiering Monday, January 22 at 10 p.m. ET on TV One.
