The American Theatre Wing announced today that its annual gala, held this past Monday evening at the Plaza Hotel, was the most successful in the organization's history, raising over $750,000 (besting the previous record, which was set in 2013, by more than $50,000). All proceeds from the evening will benefit the education and outreach programs of the American Theatre Wing, which include SpringboardNYC, the Theatre Intern Network, the National Theatre Company Grants and the Jonathan Larson Grants, and will also support free access for students, aspiring professionals, and the general public to programming on AmericanTheatreWing.org, including the long running 'Working in the Theatre' media program.
Just yesterday, beloved songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, along with cast members from Beautiful - The Carole King Musical, gathered at Serendipity 3 to celebrate their 60th Anniversary with the unveiling of a new treat, the 'Pleasant Valley Sundae': a chart-topping concoction of three scoops of vanilla and chocolate ice cream, drizzled with 'Some Kind of Wonderful' caramel, chocolate, and white chocolate sauces, balancing a solid dark chocolate Baby Grand Piano, holding yet another scoop of vanilla ice cream rising to stardom and completed with a dark chocolate piano lid, grasping a music legend cloud of whipped cream, leading down to a 'Pleasant Valley Sunday' sprinkled with candy musical notes to surely make 'The Earth Move' under your feet! In celebration of Disney's Beauty and the Beast's 20th anniversary on the stage, Disney Theatrical Productions, NETworks and Broadway Entertainment Group will present the first-ever international tour for the title. The English-language tour will open at Istanbul's Zorlu Center in October 2014 and will tour to diverse international markets including Kazakhstan, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia marking the first time Disney's timeless musical will have been seen in these territories.
