Jim Caruso's Broadway at Birdland concert series had all the traffic Monday night as Klea Blackhurst brought her hit concert, 'Everything the Traffic Will Allow' to the Birdland stage.This is Blackhurst's loving tribute to the songs made famous by the quintessential stage personality Ethel Merman. Not an impersonator and not an impressionist, Blackhurst offered a paean to the great Broadway legend that serves as a potent and happy reminder of Merman's sheer, undeniable importance to both the history of twentieth century entertainment and the iconic composers like Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin and Jerry Herman, who wrote songs just for her.

Earlier this year, Alan Cumming made his Cafe Carlyle debut with his solo show, ALAN CUMMING SINGS SAPPY SONGS, in which he performed songs full of emotion and authenticity by artists as diverse as Billy Joel, Stephen Sondheim, Bob Dylan, Jerry Herman and Miley Cyrus, to name a few. Today in 1983, La Cage Aux Folles opened at the Palace Theatre, where it ran for 1761 performances. With a book by Harvey Fierstein and lyrics and music by Jerry Herman, it is based on the 1973 French play of the same name by Jean Poiret. The original 1983 Broadway production received nine nominations for Tony Awards and won six, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. The success of the musical spawned a West End production and several international runs. The 2004 Broadway revival won the Tony Award for Best Revival, the 2008 London revival garnered the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival. The 2010 Broadway revival was nominated for eleven Tony Awards, winning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. La Cage aux Folles is the only musical which has won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical twice and the only show that has won a Best Production Tony Award (Best Musical or Best Revival of a Musical) for each of its Broadway productions.

MACK & MABEL, currently playing Chichester Festival Theatre before heading out on a UK & Ireland Tour this autumn, is transferring to the West End later this year. And, according to the New York Post, if the musical -- starring Michael Ball and Rebecca LaChance -- does well in London, it could be moving to Broadway next season.

Music Mountain, America's Oldest Continuing Summer Chamber Music Festival, continues its 86th Anniversary season with three returning favorites! The weekend begins with No Tune Like A Show Tune: The Best of Broadway, Michael Berkeley's toe-tapping musical revue, on Saturday, August 29 (6:30pm) plus pre-concert dinner (5pm)! The music continues on Sunday, August 30 (3PM) with the outstanding Dover String Quartet with guest artist Alexander Fiterstein, clarinet, performing a program featuring Dutilleux, Dvorak, and Mozart. The summer still simmers with many more concerts scheduled thru September 27!
