Michael Dunaway's senior year at Nashville's Hume-Fogg Academic High School's has indeed been a busy one for the young song-and-dance man who this week opens in his school's staging of Disney's Newsies, one of the most-often produced shows of the 2018-19 season. Playing the musical's iconic leading man Jack Kelly, Dunaway leads off his final year as HFA's leading man with one of the most coveted roles in contemporary musical theater.

Opera isn't my go-to art form, I'll admit it. In fact, I don't know many people who truly appreciate opera music nor do they understand what it actually takes to become a successful opera singer. It's an art that often goes unnoticed because of the stereotypes that it is long, boring, difficult to understand, unrelatable, and only for old, rich people. But if music is a universal language, and I truly believe this to be true, then why do we insist that we cannot understand and then listen to all forms of music except for this one? I recently had the honor of speaking with two artists who are radically trying to change the scene, and make opera music accessible to everyone.
Opera Star Marisol Montalvo Debuts New Show MAD SCENE

Producer Mark Cortale is kicking-off the seventh season of his celebrated Broadway @ NOCCA concert series on November 1 with internationally renowned opera star Marisol Montalvo, bringing her acclaimed new show Mad Scene for its New Orleans debut. The show was written and directed by Jeffery Roberson (aka Varla Jean Merman) and features William Hobbs at the piano. The series will continue with two-time Tony Award winner Christine Ebersole on December 15, Tony Award winner Jessie Mueller on January 31, and Tony nominee & star of TV's Supergirl and Smash, Jeremy Jordan on March 29 - with each joined by Sirius XM radio star Seth Rudetsky as music director and host.
