On Saturday, January 11, 2014 the National YoungArts Foundation (YoungArts) will host the organization's first Backyard Ball Performance and Gala to be held at the YoungArts Campus (2100 Biscayne Boulevard). The 2014 Arison Award Honorees are Pritzker Award Winning architect Zaha Hadid and Academy Award Winning singer, dancer, and actress, Rita Moreno. This year's Alumni Honoree is actor, singer and 1997 YoungArts Winner in Theater, Andrew Rannells. The celebratory evening of artistic immersion will bring together prominent artists, community leaders, philanthropists and celebrities to recognize the 2014 YoungArts Winners. The gala is YoungArts' largest annual fundraiser and the culmination of YoungArts' signature program YoungArts Week which provides 171 of the nation's most outstanding young artists in the literary, performing, visual and design arts with life-changing experiences, including master classes, workshops, inter-disciplinary activities, performances and exhibitions.
Broadway's new musical Big Fish will play its final performance on Sunday, December 29, 2013. This is your last chance to see two-time Tony Award winner Norbert Leo Butz (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Catch Me If You Can), Tony Award nominee Kate Baldwin (Giant, Finian's Rainbow) and Bobby Steggert (Giant, Ragtime) onstage at the Neil Simon Theatre (250 West 52nd Street). 50 uniformed members of the USO attended the show earlier this week and you can check out photos of them with the cast below!
Basquiat, a new musical about the life and times of 80's art-star, Jean Michele Basquiat just premiered a special concert version of the show at Joe's Publast night, December 16th. The performers included Eric LaJuan Summers (Motown: The Musical) as well as Lena Hall (Kinky Boots) and Felicia Finley(Mama Mia, The Wedding Singer). Other performers include Ken Robinson (Memphis), Julius Thomas III (Motown: The Musical) Chad Carstarphen (In the Heights), Benjamin Mapp, Jimmy Lambert, Roger DeWitt, Eddie Varley andNikki Kimbrough (A Night with Janis Joplin). The New Group continues its 2013-2014 season with the world premiere of Intimacy, a new play by Thomas Bradshaw. The Tony Award-winning actress Linda Lavin will return to the Vineyard Theatre (108 E. 15 St.) - where she created the role of Rita Lyons in Nicky Silver's acclaimed comedy THE LYONS in 2012 - in Mr. Silver's newest work, TOO MUCH SUN, with previews set to begin May 1, 2014 prior to an official opening on May 20. Mark Brokaw, who directed THE LYONS - including the play's recent celebrated debut in London - directs TOO MUCH SUN.
The new documentary Marvin Hamlisch: What He Did For Love is the American Masters series' Season 27 finale, premiering nationally Friday, December 27, 2013, 9-10:30 p.m. on PBS (check local listings) and available on DVD January 14, 2014 via PBS Distribution.
