Actor's Express presents An Octoroon by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. Directed by Donya K. Washington, Associate Producer at the Alliance Theatre, this wildly imaginative new work turns a 19th century melodrama on its ear in a riotous romp that hurls the antebellum south into direct collision with 21st century cultural politics. "Playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins is one of the most exciting playwrights writing for the American theatre today. This play uses crazy theatricality to cast a critical eye on the modern world through the lens of the past," says Artistic Director Freddie Ashley.
This morning, Film Independent announced the nominations for the 2019 Film Independent Spirit Awards. The Spirit Awards are the primary fundraiser for Film Independent's year-round programs, which cultivate the careers of emerging filmmakers and promote diversity in the industry. Film Independent President Josh Welsh presided over the press conference held at the W Hotel in Hollywood, with actors Gemma Chan and Molly Shannon presenting the nominations. Nominees for Best Feature included Eighth Grade, First Reformed, If Beale Street Could Talk, Leave No Trace and You Were Never Really Here.

Meghan Lantzy will become the new General Manager at Signature Theatre (Paige Evans, Artistic Director; Harold Wolpert, Executive Director; James Houghton, Founder), the company announced today. Ms. Lantzy comes to Signature from Lincoln Center Theater, where she has worked for more than 12 years.
Virginia Beach alternative rock duo Travelers have released their brand new single 'UH OH,' the third single off of their upcoming 2019 debut album 'Hideko.' 'UH OH' is out on all digital platforms NOW. A continuation of their newly developed arena-tinged sound, Travelers are unraveling the style they have been creating for 'Hideko.' Although an electronic-based rock sound is not what Travelers initially set out to create, the band sounds seasoned on 'UH OH,' finding their style and steadily building on their new branding. I was intrigued to see how the producers would breathe life into this and they have crafted a show that takes you on a bittersweet journey that is incredibly moving. And yes....you will cry. I am slightly annoyed at them for making me cry in public, I like to keep up my tough guy reputation...but I could not hold back.

Tacoma Little Theatre continues its 100th Anniversary season and celebrates the holidays with the holiday classic SCROOGE! THE MUSICAL. This musical, with book, music and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse, is adapted from the 1970 film Scrooge which starred Albert Finney and Sir Alec Guinness, and is directed by Micheal O'Hara, musically directed by Zachary Kellogg, and choreographed by Eric Clausell.
Pleasance Theatre's new season - titled #YouWillKnowTheirNames - is a game changing line-up of new writing fresh for 2019. These 10 newly announced productions showcase the most daring and original new voices and join the previously announced In Lipstick by Annie Jenkins (a co-production between award-winning theatre company Up In Arms, producer Ellie Keel and the Pleasance).
Artists Repertory Theatre presents Everybody, by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, a Pulitzer Prize finalist for Drama. The production is co-directed by Jessica Wallenfels and Damaso Rodriguez, and is an inventive twist on a medieval morality play. Everybody runs from November 25 through December 30 on the Alder Stage.

Playwrights Horizons (Artistic Director Tim Sanford, Managing Director Leslie Marcus) will, from today, November 12, through Thursday, November 15, accept entries for the Live for Five online lottery, giving out $5 tickets to the New York premiere production of Noura, from 9 Parts of Desire playwright and actor Heather Raffo and director Joanna Settle. The Washington Post deemed this "epic-feeling, nearly searing portrait of a woman torn between cultures and family" the "best premiere of the Women's Voices Theater Festival" when it made its world premiere in Washington, D.C. earlier this year. Produced in association with Shakespeare Theatre Company, it will be performed at Playwrights Horizons from November 27 to December 30. Playwrights Horizons created Live for Five in 2007 as part of their Arts Access program to reach out to those who may not be able to afford the cost of a full-price theater ticket. Since its inception, over 3,000 theatergoers have been able to attend the theater thanks to the initiative.

Singers from the Black Broadway community have joined together to create a music and mental health album of inspirational cover songs. In just two rehearsals, the Darkness RISING cast recorded an album intended for anyone who lives with anxiety, depression, bipolar, or other mental illnesses. Music has been proven be therapeutic and healing. It can provide emotional support, increase motivation, and offer an outlet for expression of feelings.
A special highlight of DCINY's 10th anniversary season is Beethoven's famed Ode to Joy, Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 12 and Fantasia in C minor, Op.80 ('Choral Fantasy').
