BWW Reviews: In The Jungle Theater's Beautiful Production of THE HEIRESS, a Woman Discovers Her Own Power through Pain and Heartache

Last weekend I saw the classic play The Heiress, about Catherine, a wealthy heiress lacking in social graces with a stern father and an unexpected suitor. I was having a hard time wrapping my head around the play until I had a sudden revelation the next morning - Catherine is Mad Men's Peggy. The Heiress is all about Catherine reclaiming her power, even if it comes at the expense of her own happiness.

Merrimack Repertory Theatre Celebrates 35th Season With a Black-Tie Gala Tonight

Merrimack Repertory Theatre (MRT) will be celebrating its 35th season with a black-tie gala tonight, June 21. Congresswoman Nicola Tsongas will present the Paul Tsongas Award to UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan in recognition of his long-time personal support and his continued work to build and expand MRT's partnership with UMass Lowell. The event will also feature the Reduced Shakespeare Company presenting 'The Complete History of MRT (abridged),' a 10-minute sketch created especially for this event.

Jeffrey Hatcher Stars in Jungle Theater's THE HEIRESS, Now thru 8/10

Acclaimed playwright-screenwriter Jeffrey Hatcher revisits his acting roots in the Jungle Theater's production of THE HEIRESS, portraying Dr. Austin Sloper, a role he says he's always wanted to play. Artistic Director Bain Boehlke designs and directs the celebrated stage adaptation based on one of Henry James' most memorable novels, Washington Square. The elegant costume drama, also stars Kate Guentzel in the title role of Catherine Sloper and her real-life husband John Catron as Morris Townsend, her suitor, supported by an all-star cast including Jennifer Blagen, Charity Jones, Wendy Lehr, Paris Hunter Paul and Anna Sundberg.

Wicked Lit Presents THE DOLL , 7/11-26

Unbound Productions Executive Director Jonathan Josephson, Artistic Director Paul Millet, and Producing Artistic Director Jeff G. Rack have announced the cast for the World Premiere Wicked Lit installation of Algernon Blackwood's THE DOLL, adapted by Rack and directed by Millet (July 11-26, 2014; Fridays-Sundays, 7:00 p.m., 8:15 p.m., and 9:30 p.m.): Asia Aragon (Unbound Productions debut), Jennifer Novak Chun (The Lurking Fear, The Masque of the Red Death Experience, and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - Wicked Lit2013), Amelia Meyers (Unbound Productions debut), Tanya Mironowski (The Unnamable, Wicked Lit 2010, 2011), and Andrew Thatcher (Wake Not the Dead, Wicked Lit 2012). The play will be performed as a full production in and around Strub Mansion (a 100-year-old Italianate Beaux Arts home) on the campus of the historic Mayfield Senior School of the Holy Child Jesus in Pasadena.

A LOSS OF ROSES to Close Off-Broadway This Saturday

A LOSS OF ROSES is concluding its limited Off-Broadway engagement tomorrow evening, June 7th at Theatre at St. Clement's, 423 West 46th Street (between Ninth & Tenth Ave.) Presented by The Peccadillo Theater Company, in association with La Femme Theatre Productions, the first NY revival of William Inge's A LOSS OF ROSES opened May 12th, 2014.

Epic Theatre Company's had a nice run this year, premiering newer works like "The Other Place," "Tribes," and "The Great God Pan," alongside well-received productions of older works like "The Normal Heart," and the currently running "Angels in America." It was a season marked by similar themes and characters, but also by "name value" playwrights and plays. Recently, I sat down with Epic's Artistic Director, Kevin Broccoli, to discuss what goes into the choosing of a season as he readies his choices for next year.

Rack have announced details about their World Premiere staged reading of MYSTERY LIT, adapted by Josephson from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories (May 22, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. and May 24, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.) and the World Premiere production of Algernon Blackwood's THE DOLL, adapted by Rack and directed by Millet (July 11-26, 2014; Fridays-Sundays, 7:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m., and 9:00 p.m.).

Photo Flash: Relatives of William Inge Visit Peccadillo's A LOSS OF ROSES

This past Sunday, May 18th, the sold out audience at the first NY revival of William Inge's A LOSS OF ROSES included Inge's nephew, James A. Mahan, as well as Mahan's children and grandchildren. They joined the cast onstage afterwards for a full family & company portrait. On behalf of the family, James Mahan's daughter Sandra wrote the following to the production the next day: 'A heartfelt thank you for having us! We so enjoyed the play and meeting the cast. Clearly everyone involved with this production put much heartfelt energy into it. Your theater has such a very warm and inviting feel which we embraced!'

Klea Blackhurst, Brian Cali, Jonathan Kaplan & More Set for TriArts Sharon Playhouse's 25th Anniversary Season

TriArts Sharon Playhouse, under the leadership of Artistic Director John Simpkins and Managing Director Justin Ball, has announced initial casting for its 25th Anniversary Season with the musicals LES MISERABLES, Falsettos, and Disney's The Little Mermaidon the Mainstage. Mitch Albom's Tuesdays with Morrie and the new musical Nine Wives (by Douglas J. Cohen and Dan Elish) will play Stage 2 in the Bok Gallery. The Youth Theatre will present the Tony-winning Spring Awakening.

2014 Winner of the Terrence McNally New Play Award Announced

Philadelphia Theatre Company is pleased to announce Martin Zimmerman as the recipient of the third Terrence McNally New Play Award for the development of his play Let Me Count The Ways. The Terrence McNally New Play Award is a cash prize given annually to recognize a new play that celebrates the transformative power of art. The Award will also include a year of development support at PTC, including readings as well as administrative support and networking to help manage the future of the play beyond its time at PTC.
