Plain Wood Productions has announced that its groundbreaking theater and film hybrid Blood/Sugar—created, directed, and performed by theater artist Diana Wyenn—is now available on-demand to the public.
Diana Wyenn's solo show BLOOD/SUGAR takes place at the intersection of public health and performance, focusing on her life as a diabetic. Performed live and broadcast from Wyenn's home, using multimedia effects, original movement, and Wyenn's physical surroundings to create a vivid account of the life-sustaining self-care that diabetes currently demands from one out of every 10 American adults. And since I am also a Type 1 diabetic, I knew I was the perfect person to speak with her about the creation of the show.
CaltechLive! will present Diana Wyenn’s Blood/Sugar on Saturday, November 21, at 7 p.m. PT. This solo show, at the intersection of public health and performance, focuses on Wyenn’s life as a diabetic. Blood/Sugar will be performed live and broadcast from Wyenn’s home.
Since the world premiere of Vietgone in 2015, Qui Nguyen has become one of the most lauded and sought-after contemporary American playwrights, as well as being a writer for Marvel and Disney. The world premiere of REVENGE SONG, his new rousing, romping, music-filled look at the real life of Julie d'Aubigny, a queer 17th century French swordswoman and opera singer, offers an exciting, entertaining, and rollicking theatrical experience, ingeniously directed by Robert Ross Parker that is sure to please rowdy fans of The Rocky Horror Picture Show during the heroine's interactive journey toward self-discovery and acceptance. Adding to the fun are satirical references to more musicals than I could count, including Hamilton, Cabaret, Company, Avenue Q, Beauty and the Beast, and Bye Bye Birdie.
As a reviewer you generally find something wrong with a production no matter how much you enjoy it. Under the fantastic direction of Robert O'Hara it features a superb cast, a compelling story, and possibly one of the best new scores of the season to be heard here or anywhere else.
Solea Pfeiffer and Emmy Raver-Lampman lead Gun & Powder as the Clarke sisters, Mary and Martha, in Signature Theatre's world premiere production of this new musical.
