BWW Review: Filling Pockets…At Any Cost. A Review of Street Corner Arts' JUNK

'This is a story of kings.' The opening line of playwright Ayad Akhtar's JUNK gives the audience an epic summary of what they're about to experience. Kings not determined by the biggest crown or most expansive army, but by the fullest pockets. Robert Merkin, played by Carlo Lorenzo Garcia, is one such king, though unconventional in that the lead character of Akhtar's longest work sees debt as an asset. Robert sits proudly on the cover Time Magazine, and he's ready to capitalize on his role as 'America's Alchemist'. Performer Garcia revels in all the teeth sucking, furtive gesticulating, and slick talking of a classic 1980's Wall Street yuppie.

Street Corner Arts Presents JUNK By Ayad Akhtar

Street Corner Arts will bring Pulitzer-Prize-winning author of DISGRACED, Ayad Akhtar's JUNK (Nominated for 2 Tony Awards in 2018; Best Play, Best Lighting Design). Inspired by the junk bond scandal of the 80s and set in the manic high-stakes trading shark tank of Wall Street, JUNK takes you on whirlwind ride at the genesis of debt financing which was the root cause of the recent housing crisis in this country.

Casey Wimpee's new play, THE BRUTES, opens in 1861 and is set in 1864. It is a look at the storied theatrical family, the Booths. It examines not only John Wilkes Booth and his plans to assassinate President Lincoln, but also the people, known as Brutes, who conspired along with him in sympathy for the South. The play looks at the reasons John Wilkes was propelled to a destiny that would wipe his families history from popular memory.

BWW Review: WAIT UNTIL DARK Toothless Thriller

WAIT UNTIL DARK is a 1966 play by Frederick Knott that was revised in 2013 by Jeffrey Hatcher. Hatcher's revisions backdate the story to 1944, making Sam and Mike Marine buddies who served together in Italy, and the doll that is the object of search now contains diamonds instead of heroin. It also slightly tightens the text, most noticeably at the end of the first act.

BWW Review: TexARTS Examines the Meaning of A FEW GOOD MEN in Lakeway, TX

Currently playing in Lakeway, Texas, Aaron Sorkin's original work A FEW GOOD MEN has been brought to life, as part of at TexARTS Academy's Professional Series. The average person recognizes this title based on its Oscar acclaim as a Best Picture nominee, and infamous line referencing ones inability to handle the truth. But in fact, A FEW GOOD MEN has a more subtle beginning based on a conversation Sorkin had with his sister regarding her time in Cuba, at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. Premiering in 1989, and then adapted for screen a few years later, this play highlights an unlikely scenario between young men defending their honor and country while taking a hazing ritual too far. This courtroom drama introduces the audience to the military mindset, through chants and marches, and the responsibility involved with following orders without question. While investigating what seems like a 'cut and dry' case, a high level conspiracy is uncovered with regards to two young marines being charged with murder. As the story unravels, the audience can piece together the timeline and key facts the lawyers are desperately searching for within the case. TexARTs presents this play with high brow sophistication, without alienating members who have not served in the military but might have caught an episode of Law & Order.

TexARTS Announces Cast of A FEW GOOD MEN

The TexARTS Professional Series presents the Aaron Sorkin drama, A Few Good Men at the Kam and James Morris Theatre, October 7 - 16, 2016. First produced on Broadway in 1989 and inspiring an Academy Award-nominated film of the same name, Aaron Sorkin's A Few Good Men tells the story of military lawyers at a court-martial who uncover a high-level conspiracy in the course of defending their clients, two United States Marines accused of murder. Based on events that took place at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in July 1986, A Few Good Men is a riveting courtroom drama that investigates both the nature of our military mentality and the Marine code of honor.
