When a scantily clad beauty took the stage at Robinson Center in Little Rock Friday, March 17, and said 'Welcome, ladies and gentlemen - you are about to witness a story of murder, greed, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery: all those things we hold near and dear to our hearts,' we knew CHICAGO THE MUSICAL - America's longest running musical in Broadway History - was going to be something special. For two days, the APEX Touring Company Fosse'd their way into Central Arkansas' heart and gave us a 'Razzle Dazzle' experience that will keep us singing for a long time.
With a 75 minute runtime, the show never becomes cloyingly sweet or as indigestible as a fruit cake, as happens with too many holiday specials. The musical has all the makings of a Hallmark Channel Christmas movie, with just a touch of tongue-and-cheek humor to give it a little zing.
Signature Theatre presents Road Show directed by Gary Griffin (Broadway's Honeymoon in Vegas, Signature's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum). Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's musical, about the real-life Mizner brothers and their quest for the ever elusive American dream, was praised as "fierce, funny, lean and heartbreaking" by the Chicago Sun-Times when Griffin's production premiered at Chicago Shakespeare Theater in 2014. Road Show will run from February 16 - March 13 in Signature Theatre's intimate MAX Theatre. Check out a first look below!
Audiences were forewarned when Carolyn Cole stepped onto the stage and announced that her Farewell Tour was, "Not yo momma's cabaret" and that it was going to be a unique evening. Aside from the brief tease of Gypsy's "Let Me Entertain You," Cole's performance was an unexpected departure from the musical standards one might except from a Signature Theatre production and was a passionate tribute to the rock standards which greatly influenced her life.
