Imaging War: New Drexel Course Explores the Way War Has Been Portrayed Through Art and Media

From the Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C. through current-day wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, our view of war has been indelibly shaped by the images we see of the conflicts and their aftermath. A new fall course at Drexel University, entitled "Imaging War," examines how the subject of war has been depicted in media ranging from photography to television to video games.

Minneapolis Musical Theatre opened their season this weekend with the regional premiere of 'Carrie The Musical', an adaptation of the Stephen King novel. I have never seen the 1976 movie or read the book. I was going into the show without any preconceived notions of what the show should or should not be. Admittedly I was nervous. I wasn't sure what to expect, but by the end of 'In' the opening number I knew I was going to enjoy the show.

Her new project, Brand New Day, makes clear the range of her artistry, and may surprise listeners who know her only for her hit "I Love You Always Forever." She performs the new work, joined by celebrated jazz musicians David King (drums), Reid Anderson (bass) and Aaron Parks (piano), September 25 at the legendary Cafe Carlyle.

Children's Playhouse of Maryland to Open 2013-14 Season with BYE BYE BIRDIE, Begin. 9/14

Children's Playhouse of MD (CPM), in residence at CCBC Essex, will open its 2013-2014 season with Bye Bye Birdie 1 p.m. on the weekends of Sept. 14-15, 21-22, 28-29 in the Administration Building Lecture Hall (formerly the J Building), CCBC Essex, 7201 Rossville Blvd. An additional 4 p.m. show Sept. 22nd will be sign language interpreted by students in the CCBC Interpreter Preparation program. Tickets are $10 each and can be ordered through the CCBC Box Office at 443-840-ARTS (2787) or online at http://www.ccbcmd.edu/performingarts/childrensplayhouse.html. Tickets will also be available at the door, space permitting. Advanced ticket purchase is recommended. Regional Dance Company of the Week: Mark Morris Dance Group, NY

The Mark Morris Dance Group was formed in 1980 and gave its first concert that year in New York City. The company's touring schedule steadily expanded to include cities both in the U.S. and in Europe, and in 1986 it made its first national television program for the PBS series Dance in America. In 1988, MMDG was invited to become the national dance company of Belgium, and spent three years in residence at the Theatre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels. The company returned to the United States in 1991 as one of the world's leading dance companies, performing across the U.S. and at major international festivals.
