The Broadway at Birdland concert series celebrated a musical trifecta on Monday night, with sublime jazz vocalist Jane Monheit, extraordinary arrangements by Mary Ann McSweeney, and a wealth of Irving Berlin material. The stellar backup band for the evening evening included McSweeney on bass, Jim Ridl on piano, and Alvester Garnett on drums. Several months ago, the Monheit-McSweeney duo teamed up with a swinging take on Cole Porter's iconic score for Anything Goes, to great acclaim.

The Ogunquit Playhouse, America's Foremost Summer Theatre, will be one of the first regional theatres in the U.S. to produce the Tony Award winning Billy Elliot the Musical on stage June 25 to July 26. Billy Elliot tells the story of a young boy who discovers his true passion lies in ballet class and not in the boxing ring, and then finds the strength to defy the convention of his small UK mining town to make his dream come true. The Ogunquit production features a cast of Broadway veterans, including Anastasia Barzee, Armond Shultz and Tony Award nominee Joel Blum.

Due to popular demand, the World Premiere of Chris Lemmon in JACK LEMMON RETURNS, will be extended from June 25 through July 20 at The Royal George Theatre, 1641 North Halsted Street. After a brief hiatus starting June 8, the production that has been called 'A very classy solo tribute!' (Chicago Tribune); 'An honest, loving 'living memoir'!' (Chicago Sun-Times); and "An affectionate and all-together absorbing tribute!" (TimeOut Chicago) will return to Chicago for this strictly limited engagement.

Complete with flying monkeys and witches, colorful munchkins, and a real 'Toto,' The Wizard of Oz will run today, June 6th through the 22nd at the Baldwin Theatre, 415 S. Lafayette in downtown Royal Oak.

Tonight, June 5th at 7pm Marissa Miller (Wicked) will make her solo cabaret debut at the Laurie Beechman Theatre with her new show 'Castles in the Air.' Tedd Firth serves as musical director and pianist alongside Dave Berger on drums, Steve Doyle on bass, and Sean Harkness on guitar. Direction is by Benjamin Simpson (Mother Jones).

ASCAP award-winning writer Chip Deffaa-who wrote and directed such Off-Broadway successes as 'George M. Cohan Tonight!' and 'One Night with Fanny Brice'-has now dramatized the life of Irving Berlin. His musical play, 'Irving Berlin's America'--co-starring stage/screen veteran Michael Townsend Wright and young Giuseppe Bausilio from Broadway's 'Billy Elliot' and 'Newsies'--opens June 15th at the 13th Street Repertory Theater. "One Night with Fanny Brice," which opened Off-Broadway at St. Luke's Theater on 46th Street in 2011 and moved to the 13th Street Theater (50 W. 13th St., New York City) in 2013, will go on summer hiatus following the Monday, June 9th performance. The show will resume performances at the 13th Street Theater in September. This summer, the show will play at the Open Eye Theater (Amie Brockway, Artistic Director) in the Catskills. The show is published/licensed by Leicester Bay Theatricals. The Off-Broadway cast album, released by Original Cast Records, is available from Amazon, CDBaby, iTunes, etc.

Playhouse Producing Artistic Director Chuck Tobin today announced casting for the production of the new Mel Brooks Broadway Young Frankenstein (June 17 - 28, 2014). Young Frankenstein features a book by three-time Tony Award-winner Mel Brooks and three-time Tony Award-winner Thomas Meehan and music and lyrics by Brooks.
